Icom shows all new IC-7110 that replaces IC-7100!

While the evening greyline was approaching our Atlantic coast last night, big news was unfolding in the Land of the Rising Sun. At Tokyo Ham Fair, Icom released the IC-7110 mobile all-mode transceiver. As a successor to the 13-year-old IC-7100, this new radio inherits its father’s basic traits: HF, 50MHz, 144Mhz, and 430Mhz bands, and all the regular modes you’d expect, including D-STAR.

The 7110 also has the standard features seen in its brothers and sisters, like built-in compatibility for internet remote control through version 2 of the RS-BA1 software, standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C connectivity, and a crisp 4.3” color touchscreen display with the IC-705-like GUI and waterfall display.

As we could tell from Icom’s X-026 prototype display at Dayton, the IC-7110’s slim control head (36.2mm thick) is closer to the athletic 30mm waistline of its grandfather, the IC-7000, without a hint of the bulbous proportions of its dad, the IC-7100. Good looks definitely skipped a generation in this instance.

Speaking of ancestors, it’s hard to find any resemblance to the venerable IC-706. I guess they both have remote control heads and are both compatible with the AH-4 auto-tuner? The 706 was a much more compact radio.

Looks like a nice radio! Expecting it to cost upwards of $1800-$2000. I think $1500 would be a pretty good price for it, thought unlikely.

 

Looks like it may come with the more pleasant sounding HM 219 mic vs that awful HM 198 hand mic the 7100 came with.

 

What I'm still REALLY hoping for is the possibility to connect the Control Panel and the Main Radio through a LAN/Internet connection.

But unfortunately it looks like they've only intended the radio to be used remotely from the RS-BA1 PC SW, and from Android and iOS smartphone apps.
Maybe they'll do the same thing they did with the 7760, initially releasing it without LAN/Internet Control Panel connection, but adding it at a later FW update.

Otherwise the 7110 will be like the 905, that only works with a direct Ethernet cable connection between the radio components.

This is the news I've been waiting for for a few years ever since the 7000 was discontinued.

I'll be first in line for one to go in my new truck to replace the FT710

I was hoping it would have an automatic antenna tuner. Xiegu offers that even. Otherwise, this looks like a winner of a radio!

 

It is an interesting choice to have link/activity/power lights on the RJ45 port. So it is very likely using some form of POE protocol. I didn't know they added switched ethernet to the 7760 after a firmware update, so that does offer a glimpse of hope they do the same with the 7110. But I don't think they see that as a typical feature found in a mobile focused radio.

 

Thank you Icom for finally giving us a real replacement for the IC7000. Had 3 IC700's in past, love them, still run 2 of them, tried the 7100...not for me. Everything I've seen so far indicates the IC7110 will be a very sweet, yet pricey, rig for the truck. I want one! As others have said, "shut up and take my money", LOL.

I currently use a TS-480 remotely with the RemoteRig boxes. I absolutely love the fact that I have the real front panel of the rig here in front of me. While the radio part is half a world away.
I've tried operating remotely by just using a PC SW, but I don't like it.
When the 905 came out, I had the same hopes, to use that radio remotely (Since they do use a Ethernet connection to the front panel). But looks like that's a n0-g0.

I'm REALLY hoping Icom adds the 7760-like switched Ethernet connectivity to the 7110. The moment they do, I'm buying one.

It might somewhat cannibalize Icom's sales of a IC-7300(MK2) / 9100 combo. All in one box (except 23cm), and will be a helluva lot cheaper...I'm guessing +/- $2K.

 

Only bad part I'm sitting for is price. 7300 MKii at $1500 this will be $1700, my guess.

 

I’m pretty surprised if it opens at sub $2K.

they should have made an icom 7000 replacement instead. a single unit that COULD have a separate head. A real mobile or backpack portable package. This form factor is really only good home/mobile or picnic table portable. And from the looks of it, you can't plug the mic into the head unit??? AND no V/U or U/V full duplex AGAIN. Pass..
