    I wouldn't recommend it as a home rig with an amp (unless you already own the amp) if for no other reason than cost. If the IC-705 turns out to be $1,200, your cheapest 100w amp solution (commercial product) is going to be another $600. The math is easy.

    Depending upon how important 2m and 70cm ssb are to you, an IC-7300 at $1,000 gives you--more or less--the same radio as the IC-705 on HF; but with 100w and an ATU. Adding a decent 2m/70cm radio gets you well below the price of the IC-705 and an amp.

    If your only holdup is spending money on older technologies, go ahead and buy an IC-7610 and an IC-9700. That will cover you with SDR radios from 160m to 23cm.
