On my IC-7300, I can disable transmitting when keying (using the VOX/BKIN button) and just listen to the sidetone for code practice. Is it possible to do the same for the IC-735? What settings are necessary to hear the sidetone without transmitting?

Do you have a small dummy load ? I'd connect a dummy load to the SO-239 Antenna port on the rear, then run RF Power Control to minimum. That would dump the 10 watts of RF power into the load, harming nothing and interfering with nobody. of course you'd need to reconnect to an antenna to copy. :)

    Put in CW mode
    Turn VOX off
Do not push the transmit button
Press the CW key and listen to the side tone
Adjust the side tone level via the control on the bottom of the radio for the desired side tone volume
Turn the RF gain down and the AF gain up for desired volume and minimal background noise
