"...IMHO, plainer fonts are better: easier to read..."

Depends on how you make the 3D fonts. A plain background and a simple 'drop-shadow' makes them stand out.

Here are a couple of cards. The first is my own, and the second was for RAOTA (Radio Amateur Old Timers' Association) Diamond Jubilee event. Our regular call is G2OT

The callsigns started out as regular 2d black text, and then I did some photoshop work. The RAOTA logos I drew from scratch.

If you are careful a 3D font still looks good on a detailed background

Glad you liked them. I use a very old copy of Photoshop (v7), which goes back to the 80's.
Its a world away from the latest versions but its still smarter than me so there is no point in upgrading & the latest version costs a fortune.
There are a couple of good freebies available. Paint.Net (not to be confused with MS paint) and GIMP but I'm so familiar with all the commands in my old copy of PS that I CBA to learn a new package from scratch until such time as I want to do something that PS7 can't.

There are plenty of royalty-free images onlineto use as backgrounds if you don't have a suitable photo.

perhaps ... i find the first example significantly easier to read than the second example. but folks can manipulate the font and it's 3d-ness directly ...

    That's my QSL card .
To create it I used soldering iron, some electronics component, a camera and Corel Draw :)
