If anyone knows of a REAL registered charity that I can donate several radios and related equipment to please let me know. The charity in NYC does not want my items. I am in Colorado. I would box the items up for free but the charity would have to pick all of it up or pay for any form of shipment. Let me know if you can recommend one. 73, Len Rusnak

The "charity" in NYC is suspect as well.

Years ago I went to that school looking for the ham station and found out that the guy left and doesn't teach there any more.

I mentioned this on another forum (eham) and got threatening emails that he would sue me etc etc.

Sounds like someone's a bit paranoid! [IMG]

Have a Local Ham club or Red Cross, Chapter ? if its in working condition or not you would still support Ham Radio and its a Legit Tax Write Off  unless you have a similar Yada Yada issue.

or Do something to freak em out!  have a young inspiring Ham who does not have any money ? give it to him and don't say a word here on this board or any place. and don't announce it even in the papers or whatever.

You Stand taller feeling you helped out someone with out tooting a Horn.

I came accross various things in life and found after announcing I learned something some expect to do something all the time like you have alot of checks in your check book life lesson learned. or they expected you to do this and that when you don't have time anymore.

Who ran the charity in NYC? The only one I know about is WB2JKJ and his organization seems to be doing what he says it does.

During 9/11 those assigned to JHS 22 in NYC went looking for the station because we figured we could set up there.

We were told that Fairclough doesn't teach at JHS 22 anymore. In fact he hasn't been teaching there in years.

Maybe he's doing legit things now, who knows.

But there is no radio club in JHS 22 itself right now.

What exactly is he doing these days?

Interesting...... he has an ad in QST every month and I thought that he was still touting "the crew at 22". I wonder if he has set up another foundation in another school.

I heard him on 20 meters some months ago operating mobile in NY and calling his vehicle the crew mobile. He used to sell old ham gear manuals here on QRZ, but I don't think he has advertised here for several years. I always wondered what he did with all the radios that were donated to the crew at 22. I assumed that he either sold them to help fund education at the school or he gave them away to other schools who wanted to start a club station or that they were given to deserving new hams who could not afford to get on the air without his help. At least I hope he was / is.

Well I won't say anything else about him because I will just get another harrassing email from Joe.

But if anyone can prove me wrong that the 22 crew aren't phoney baloney, please do. I am really scratching my head over this one.

I live in the Northern Virginia/Washington DC region. If you are still looking for a charity, there are several in this area that my local club (W4OVH www.w4ovh.net) works with. I can get you some choices with contact information if you'd like.

My technology classroom at Suzanne Middle School would sure appreciate the ham equipment. We are working on a ham station and student licensing program. As a public school we are officially "Cheritable". Please check classroom my website... WD6ERYSuzanne Middle School Technology Learning Center [IMG]

Go to QRZ, look up WB2JKJ for more info. Not endorsing just providing info.

Well It looks like the club is still at JHS 22 but I am a bit amazed about the Vegas conference. Kind of reminds me of the old SAROC ham conference that was held at the old Flamingo hotel/casino.
It also seems that he is helping other school based radio clubs get
started. (according to what he has up on QRZ.)

There are certainly some mixed signals on this thread though.

    Well the info is conflicting.

Does Fairclough teach at JHS22 anymore?

    Does JHS22 even exist anymore?

I looked for it at DOE's website and the only JHS 22 I can find is in the Bronx.

However, he does have the "educom" organization. I am not quite sure what he does with that.

I do know of a couple of school radio clubs, such as the one at Brooklyn Technical High School (Brooklyn Tech). But as I said, when we went looking for the station at JHS 22 in 2001, it was nowhere to be found.

By the way, WB2JKJ is not a club callsign, it belongs to an individual.

I did a bit of research on the web and it seems like Joe has retired from teaching a few of years ago. I could only find two references that mentioned that though.

I also found that there is a JHS 22 Foundation that have some references on the web. I do not know if this is Joe's foundation or if it is another foundation that benefits the school.

He does advertise in a number of publications though and I would guess that he does what he says he does and is very involved in education through communications.

WB2JKJ is or was a teacher at JHS 22 on the lower east side of Manhattan.   I know this to be a fact because I spent one whole school day visiting his classroom where I met dozens of seventh grade students in JKJ's classes.

There was a VERY well equipped ham station in the classroom and I know that students who got licenses but could not afford gear were provided with ham gear to use at home.   Most students were in that situation as the area surrounding JHS22 was not what one would consider "moneyed."

My visit there was in early 1993 and I cannot say anything about the years since.  But in 1993 at least, the "22 Crew" was real and on the air.

WA3TJO, there must be a club near you or perhaps at least hams who have responsibilities that keep them from buying decent gear. I commend and thank you, on behalf of ham radio, for your efforts.
