    I had a Tandberg Solvsuper 3 that had a cap like that. 3500vdc rating. Yup, shorted and took out the xfmr. Bad idea.

    That shunt capacitor across the gas tube is for noise suppression and it's a very very good idea. Those things produce a lot of trash.

    Shunt capacitor must be limited to low value. Above 0.1uF, you've got yourself a relaxation oscillator.

    See standard textbooks (ARRL, Orr) for typical circuit-design values.

    For the sake of restoration purposes I went on ahead and pulled that capacitor. I want this HRO-60 to be as close to original as possible -- then I'll look at mods. Modifications and restoration at the same time on a rig with a lot of history in it can be a recipe for confusion and mistakes.
