I bring up dxSummit on my phone, plug in the callsigns I'm looking for, and check the results periodically.
A thousand years ago we used "one ringers" and actual phone calls to let each other know.
    My how times have changed.

The camaraderie level has changed a lot in the hobby over the years. It would be awesome to get a call on the local repeater or telephone saying some rare DX is on the air.

sounds like a great ego booster for the big amp guys....cant think of anyone on ham radio who is
important to me...to me all hams are equal...but i guess you have to come up with something
so the jerks with ego problems can have their appearance on the air announced so you little people
can worship them...guy who came up with this must have a huge ego problem that he felt he
    was being ignored

    Or...

Maybe it would just be nice to know when a good friend and fellow ham is on the air and available for a ragchew...

    Reread the OP's topic:

One could interpret the words "somebody important" in more than one way. Important to whom? The OP was lambasted by posters that interpreted it as arrogant yootoobers thinking that they were important just because they are yootoobers. However, the OP specifically replied to me explaining that the system works for ANYONE, not just members of the media.

...and my friends are important to me.

Here's what I transcribed from the introduction of the video:

There's a piece of software out there called HamAlert, and I'm going to show you how to set it up to notify you when all of your favorite YouTubers are on the air so you can help us make better contacts and bring more content to you on to YouTube.

Wonderful ... key words being "replied to me".

However, the introduction makes is perfectly clear the intention of the video, and the implied definition of "somebody important".

That's pretty cool! I knew he was a ham but didn't know he was ever active.

Six months before Art Bell passed away, I had a delightful 30 QSO on 20-SSB with him - I will forever kick myself for not hitting "record" on the IC-7300. I immediately put a QSL and SASE in the mail but alas I will never see a reply :(

    I better reply then!

Or maybe I just messed up? Maybe those who do NOT reply are MORE important?

Art Bell! Cool. I miss his radio program.
Brando was on evenings when in Tahiti.
