Get a microcontroller and a GPS module, and write code to calculate / display grid square from GPS coordinates. Really easy with a Raspberry Pi and a USB GPS dongle. Slightly more work for an Arduino, TTL GPS module and a LCD display.
I think my Garmin GPS II is even older... and it still has Maidenhead Grids as one of the display options. Maidenhead may be standard with Garmin GPS products.
Did it change whether you were in the driver's or passenger seat?
