I just got my ticket three days ago and I've been having a blast. I was listening for weeks before my exam and have a book with pages of logged callsigns. I am now in search of an elmer! I have some pointed questions if anyone is interested, but the chief of among them being "how do I even get an elmer?" What are some things to be aware of or wary of? My grandfather warned me about guys who want to sell you their old stuff, so I noted that pretty well.

Thank you all, I've been having fun cruising this website and gleaning what I can, where I can.

Find a local club. (Search on the ARRL website for ones near you).
If they have a website, see if they might be a good match for you, and whom to contact.
Go to a meeting. (Virtual meeting, on Zoom or WebEx or.... check the club website).
    Introduce yourself.
    Ask questions. Seek advice.
One or mentors should present themselves.

It may take visits to more than one club to find a good mentor.

That’s one way. There are many others.

Yes these days it's best to find a nearby club or two and meet some people and ask questions.

Call first however - make sure they're meeting in person and such. It's not guaranteed in all states right now (WA, OR we are still about 95% shut down)

Congratulations. I'd look to the folks you took your test with, or had it administered by. It's great you some taste of the hobby thru your grandfather, and yeah, some do try pawning junk off. For the most part, I was loaned gear (and returned it) as well as having loaned stuff out later in the hobby.
    Have fun.

I've experienced this! I bump into W7RAT on 2m calling frequently. He's filled me in on a lot and answers my questions every time.
