Two meters often seems to be completely deserted. Even in large metro areas it can be hard to find a QSO. There seem to be few people monitoring and far fewer who are willing to respond to calls from people they don't know.

What can we do to turn this situation around? More hams is not the answer - we have 600,000 now who seem to have lost their microphones or never really learned to 'talk' on the radio.

    Here's one idea :

If we could be of service, perhaps we could run informal nets with mobiles 'patrolling' areas of interest to civil defense. I say informal, in that we would like to encourage ragchewing while at the same time doing something of potential public service. (I am not suggesting that we would in any way, shape, or form play 'cop' - we would just report anything that we saw that was suspicious - a 'neghborhood watch' on wheels. Private citizens only, no 'wannabe's' allowed!!!).

That's one idea - what are some more???
