    My experience:
Fan dipole (40/20/15/10 meters) built from #10AWG CCS. Mounted atop a 21' X2" fence toprail. Base of fencepost fitted to PVC "LB" at the base. Coax was connected to large open frame relay that when NO was just feeding the coax INSIDE of fencrpost. Also it connected the shield to ground radials/rabbit fencing (Buried).
Engage relay & it shorted the antenna side shield, center conductor & fencepost together. Shield was still connected to radials & rabbit fence.
Made for a somewhat decent 80 meter antenna with a loading coil.
I was contemplating a rotary inductor, but am moving to Florida & will start over with the antenna farm.
