Homebrew solution to the Icom OPC-2350LUfor 9700

    Hi all
    Just looking for help with making a homebrew cable from a FTDI usb to TTL for the IC 9700 data port which is a 2.5 stereo jack. The Icom Manuel shows Tx to tip Rx to ring and ground to body, all those are available on the FTDI board but wondering if anyone has had success doing this cable. The Icom cable is £50+ which seems a tad expensive.

    Icom Radios have used the CI-V data bus (network) since the 1980s.

    H. DATA JACK [DATA] (p. 13-2)
    Connects to devices to control an external unit or to control the transceiver with 2.5 mm (1⁄10") stereo (TRS) plug.

    I. USB PORT (B TYPE) [USB] (page 13-2)
    Connects to a Personal Computer (PC)

    J. CI-V REMOTE CONTROL JACK [REMOTE] (p. 13-3)
    Connects to a PC or other transceiver for external control.

    DATA Port (2.5mm jack, referenced as H. above)

    1.) Connects a PC through a data communication cable (user supplied), for data communication, DV Gateway 2.5mm RxD functions or remote controlling by CI-V commands.

    2.) Using the optional communication cable, you can use the Icom RS-MS1A application.

    3.) Connecting a GPS unit (NMEA compatible) or GPS output compatible Icom transceiver (Example: ID- 31PLUS) enables the received position data to be displayed on the IC-9700's display.

    FTDI Chip, based in the UK, sells a variety of pre-made cables (sold directly or thru UK distributors — like Farnell).

    FTDI makes a variety of Pre-made cables (3.5mm plug, bare leads, etc.)
    For 2.5mm you can ASK, or use an “Off Shelf” adapter cable 3.5mm female to 2.5mm male.
    Yes, I hear that complaint by USA radio amateurs,
    where $15/hour buys unskilled workers without technical skills — requiring training.
    How many radio amateurs have Basic Tools, Hands-On Skills, or Time/Patience to Build the Cable? Easier to memorize a Question Pool, Get a Piece of Paper, just to Talk (Tech competence Optional)

    DIY Build has been covered, using FTDI USB to UART (TTL) Bridge chips and cables to a specific connector for the past 15 years on Internet (Tech Forums, YouTube, etc).
    Letach Direct (Shanghai, China) sells a pre-made cable (Amazon) for APC products, for less than $15, IF you desire cheap with mixed Quality/Workmanship Reviews.

    FIRST, for DIY —- an important question.
    What is the Voltage Level on that UART (TTL)?
    That answer is likely buried in the Technical Supplements or Service Manual.
    It may even require examining the specific part and looking at a datasheet.

    From 1980 to 2000, +5 V was most common. However, at end of 20th Century, +3.3 V usage began and in the past decade +1.8 VDC began to appear.
    IF 3.3V, you need to select a 3.3V solution — preferable 5V tolerant.

    You have Two Choices using the FTDI FT 232R Chipset series, Breakout or Cable,
    that just require wiring up the 2.5mm connector.

    Ok thank you Gregory W9GB, so I bought a ftdi board https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233996971669 i wired tx to the tip of the 2.5 and rx to the ring with ground to the sleeve. No luck connecting the Doozy software to the 9700. I have the expensive icom cable ( borrowed from a friend) ant that works fine so not sure where I'm going wrong?
