    If you look up the transistor manufacturers data sheet for your final, and look for a graph with a title "imd vs power output" you'll see why running "flat out" is not a very good idea.

    You may also see something like "guaranteed to make xxx watts into any vswr at yyy volts without damage"


    If the manufacturer could get "more juice with less squeeze" :) they would.

    You need to use a peak reading meter to observe your true power output.

    Incidentally, your power output should be measured while TX'ing using CW. Whistling and yelling into the mic etc. on SSB isn't going to provide you with any kind of accurate reading.

    Also when you test, be sure to bypass the onboard ATU, it will rob you of some output. I notice this on my 480 when driving my amp.
