make sure you set that override drop down to "always"
Yellow actually looks pretty good, now that I try it.

so while i try to figure cloning my new drive, this one that did the blue screen AND black screen,
would run 20 min and crash,is now running since 8pm with one brief mouse pause.
it kinda goes into slow motion for awhile.
iy never crashes anymore, just pauses?? !!
just might be that fan thing...
and btw when i clik a shortcut to this or other sites i get a yellow screen like i want, then white as it starts opening the forum...cant get yello...

    just sayin...

Can you burn a CD with MEMTEST86, boot from that, let it run overnight. Maybe your machine has memory errors, or defective CPU core(s).

I've had both of those, several times.

In other words, it's not safe to copy files off the old drive until you are sure the rest of the machine is reliable.

i can gamble anything at this point. i have other comps to use.
just like to get this one working with the new drive.
there is no doubt the hd is bad, failing.
after maybe an hour of normal use the hd lite blinks slow, then stops.
mouse moves but does nothing. or it just goes blank.
i simply dont know enuf about what can be done to replace a hd...

While the HD may be (is?) probably going bad, if the system just "hangs," it way well be heat related as well; an overheating CPU can "freeze" a machine. (What processor is in the machine in question?) MoBo may also be part of the problem; some I have had just shut down EVERYTHING if the CPU temp (set in MoBo BIOS) is exceeded.

most of the time hard drive failures present themselves as not booting at all or error codes from bios.
example: the old xt systems would exhibit a 1176 error indicating a hard drive/ controller failure
drives can be noisy and still work for a while but a good indicator of failing hard drive is it will get very hot to touch.
programs freezing is caused by overheating cpu, memory faults,
blue screen however is usually interrupt conflict.
resources are managed by registry but a corrupt registry may attempt to use the same resource( memory address or interrupt) at the same time without setting a priority to one task or the other.
when that happens the os goes DUH! and sets off the blue/black screen of death
