I only met Barbara twice. However, she is the "real" power behind the Bush family. Also, contrary to some of the "hard line" Republicans, Barbara is also pro-choice! She has worked behind the scenes at a number of the Texas State Republican Conventions to get abortion removed from the platform, even to get Republicans not to discuss it at all since every two years (the convention is held every two years in Texas) the battles get pretty bloody on the subject.

There is an organization of both pro-choice and pro-life members who try every time to get this divisive subject out of politics since there will never be any solution acceptable to both sides. Unfortunately, the pro-lifers say that anyone who supports this cannot be pro-life and get pretty ugly with their charges against this organization.

Due to my uncertain health, the convention that was held this past week was the first time since 1976 that I have not been a delegate! At the 1992 convention I was one of then President George H. W. Bush's personal escorts! That was, to me, quite an honor!

I did meet President Reagan in 1988 and sat about 15 feet from him when he spoke in the Dallas area. Again, that was an honor! My local Texas State Representative (who lives 5 blocks from me and who's youngest daughter and my middle daughter were best friends from kindergarten through high school) called me a couple of hours before the speech and said that he had come up with an additional ticket and would I like to attend! It took me about 5 minutes to get ready!

You have to be doing something right to be able to rub shoulders with those people, Glen.

The farthest I got is I met Jim Oberstar the State Representative three times,,,
Met Paul Wellstone once, and met Billy Graham once, and talked to him for ten minutes.

I even had dinner one evening with Lawrence Welk on one occasion and with the "Ragin' Cajun" another time!

My wife's aunt (who just died a few months back at age 101!) and uncle lived in the Lawrence Welk retirement village near Escondido, California. We were eating at the country club when Lawrence Welk showed up to audition a new singer for his show that was singing at the country club. This was Anna-Connie (sp?) who later became a regular on his show. Mr. Welk saw my wife's uncle, with whom he had worked on some projects around the retirement village, and came over and sat down and stayed with us for well over a half-hour. Then he picked up my #2 daughter (who was the youngest at the time) and carried her all over the dining room for quite a while.

Of course we didn't have a camera along! However, there were people who always carried their cameras along whenever they ate at the country club "just in case" Lawrence showed up! There are probably 500 or more photos of Lawrence Welk and my middle daughter. But, we don't have a single one!

Kelly wasn't "thrilled" about this until she was in her late "teens". Now days (she will be 31 in August) she sometimes "brags" about this!

The "Ragin' Cajun", Justin Wilson, was the featured speaker at a convention here in the Dallas, Texas, area back in late 1969. My immediate boss was in charge of the programs for the convention so my wife and I got to eat dinner with him before he spoke at the convention. In "real life" he was nothing like his character!

My mother's eldest sister's husband (the guy who invented - held the patent on - the motorized lawn edger) became a good friend of Ray Corrigan (of the cowboy movie "3-Mesquiteers" fame) and whenever we were out in California we would go out to Ray's movie ranch (of which there is still a small portion open to the public just a short ways from the Reagan Presidential Library). Alibi Terhune (the ventroliquist in the old "B" cowboy movies) was often there. One time, when my sister was about a year old, he used her for his "dummy", making her "say" all sorts of things! I think that was the time that I got saddle sores from too much horseback riding!

Senator Phil Gramm (R. Texas) nominated me for one of the FCC Commissioners positions that were open when George H. W. Bush first became President (1989). I made it until the last "round" when the "usual" suspects (Washington "in" types) were the finalists! But, even to be nominated for such a position was definitely a "feather in my cap"! This was not for amateur radio but for the commercial two-way radio field experience. However, the nomination did "help" me to get a consulting position with Fluor Daniel Telecommunications (attached to Texas Utilities).

Anyway, we didn't have much money when I was growing up, but, for some reason, I got to meet a number of people back then (like General Eisenhower when he was running for President), several movie stars, etc. After I went off to college I started meeting a lot more political figures, etc. Not too bad for a guy from a small city 50 miles from Chicago!

wow Glen, and I thought that having my chance to meet Hillary Clinton but deciding not to was an honor [IMG]

I had been called in to a hotel in Toledo shortly after the first Clinton speech at the Raddison while he was campaigning for election. The White House communications staff had half tapped all the out bound CO's and it was screwing with our stuff.
(White House Comm staff was in charge of telcom for him since he was a governor)
After I finished up, I needed to tell the manager I had finished and while waiting at the front desk, a customer later joined me in my wait. Shortly after, Hillary Rodham came to the counter, she was about 8 feet away.
I turned to the customer and said "that is Hillary, want to meet her?"
he looked at me, and said "naw",
    I said, "me neither".

Clinton's crew later decided to screw up the phone system a second time a couple weeks later... and I had to go back again.

But I did meet a woman that would make a good president... Liddy Dole. I met her in Hawaii in 1992.
