Let's see that phone bill after a month of talking all over the world.

Exactly. The "noise-free" comes at a price. Just as with FM, digital voice doesn't magically fix noise issues. It just hides them, sometimes. If you have lots of signal, it hides them well, but that's largely true of many modes. If I can hear the other guy S9+60dB or more, background noise is probably not an issue, regardless of the mode.

I'm glad there are folks who like tinkering with digital voice. It has its uses. For now, I'm going to continue to hang out on HF where there are actual people to talk to.

$40 bucks every month - I can use TCP-IP connections for calls. Old technology, you may have heard of it.

I also use something called "HF" or high frequency radio. Pretty slick stuff, multi-mode, low power mostly. So, if the network is down or I'm out in the Alaska bush, I still get to talk with people from all over the world. Fun stuff.

BTW - love the call sign, you a fan?

Somewhat. I miss the old Virgin Radio of the 90s.
