To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal, amateur radio operators across New York will take to the airwaves September 16–25 during the World Canals Conference clubs and individuals will set up portable stations along the 524-mile Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, making radio contacts across the country and around the world. The 10-day event highlights both the history of the canal and the growing popularity of POTA, which encourages licensed amateur radio operators to operate outdoors from parks, trails, and historic sites. More than 18 clubs will be on the air, with many stations also activating the Empire State Trail along the canal. The event will even include amateur radio clubs transmitting from USS Little Rock at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, and USS Slater, the WWII Destroyer Escort in Albany, NY. Updates and photos from activators will be shared with hashtags #ErieCanal200 #ErieCanalway #parksontheair, and on the Facebook event at Parks on the Air - Erie Canal Bicentennial Celebration.
