Self employment is great but you must exercise discipline. An old friend of mine who passed a few years ago, lacked such discipline. Shortly after he started his cabinet shop he fell into month long alcoholic binges. He was spotted going to and from the grocery store with the back seat stacked 5 high of cases of beer. In that first year he managed to trim the ends off of 2 fingers. His reaction was to pour cold beer over the wounds to sanitize. He would then power down the shop and sit in his rocker, sipping a cold one, contemplating when he should trust the tablesaw next. It would be sad but for Lacy's tales explaining how he fought the demons by throwing hammers and lumber at them. A true giant in his own mind.
Over the years just about all the Ham radio stores in Michigan have closed. Now I have to travel anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, depending which store I wish to visit, just to see the product before my purchase.
Except for the thousands of people who work in: 1. amateur radio retail sales 2. service and repair 3. engineering design 4. factory production, test, and QC 5. amateur radio journalism (magazines, newsletters, and websites) 6. amateur radio software development and sales 7. publishers of maps, QSL cards, books, etc. 8. paid QSL managers 9. etc. Think a little before you type.
