    question about APRS VHF , as with anything radio you need someone to pick up the signal. Given that the various APRS VHF repeaters all reside on 145 mhz (around there) you would need a repeater within 20 miles to pick up the APRS signal. So do I have it right that APRS VHF only works if you have a digital repeater that can pick it up?

    But have also seen that most smart cellphones have an APRS app, that can work via cellphone towers.

    Chance of having an APRS VHF repeater you can hit, and chance of being able to hit a cell phone tower are about the same. Thus kind of negating (canceling out) getting the hardware to do APRS considering the expense. Or do I have this wrong?
