I wonder if Hallicrafters would have been around today if they had advertised to
the Brass in Technicolor (Or at least KodaChrome)....

I'll take a 70 year old Hallicrafters over a new Baofeng any day.

The BC-342 receiver was made by a bunch of manufacturers, the government owned the design but I think RCA made most of them. I had one in the 60's and it was a pretty good receiver but it only covered from about the top of the AM broadcast band to 18 MHZ. It also required a separate power supply and the whole thing weighed about 45 pounds. The BC-610 was a great transmitter but I would not want one now. They are clunky and weigh a ton, and some parts are getting a little scarce, not to mention they take up a lot of room. Fun to see the historical stuff but I don't want a rig like that in my shack. I have plenty of boat anchors already and to be honest they are OK to fool around with sometimes but I mostly prefer my modern rigs.

My first radio was an SX 71 receiver. So, even though modern stuff outperforms the old boat anchors, they still hold a special place to me, even if they were made long before I was born

I still have an SX-71, re-capped, tuned, and a few tweaks to the IF bias. It works like a champ.
