That is certainly good news. My understanding is the boat (Marion Dufresne) that brings you to the Crozet islands (Possession Island) from Reunion Island only does the trip four times a year. If the TAAF (French Antarctic Authority) made Thierry stick to the original 3 week operating window, he would be waiting idly on the island for the boat during the months of February and March. Even when the boat arrives, it does not go back to Reunion Island directly, but rather passes by the other islands in the FAAT group before returning in May. He would be good if he could take advantage of the entire 3 month window. This Dxpediation is quite a commitment for Thierry. A Dxpedtion is a hard job enough for a team of people, you need to be a superman to do it your own. I am sure it took years to navigate the French bureaucracy to get permission to go to the Crozet Islands and operate as FT8WW. I have been lucky enough to work him once on 30 meters after 10 hrs of trying, monitoring conditions and experimenting with my antennas. I am very grateful I got through once.
I worked him on 30 m on a vertical and only took 30 minutes. I couldn't believe he picked me out of that crowd with my modest station.
I got him yesterday with my inverted vee on 30.... but I think I got lucky, as he had just got back on the air maybe 20 minutes earlier and wasn't on the spotting networks yet. An hour later, it was back to the full-on cacophony of callers and I likely never would have gotten through. It was nice to see my call sign show up in his ClubLog this morning Now on to the hunt for the Congo station on CW!!! Dave W7UUU
Wow! What are the odds???!! At first I was positive it must be a pirate - he gave me a +13 dB report which I thought to be very suspicious - given that he's just on a wire antenna on 30m as well as on my end, and only running 100 watts (no idea what he was running though).... but once it showed in ClubLog I had a big smile Dave W7UUU
Pirates are quickly identified and reported on Dxwatch.com FT8WW news as well as the "Crozet 2022" Twitter feed. I usually check those sites before I bother calling out.
"Work first - question later" is how I roll. If I DON'T show up in the DX log, no harm done. Dave W7UUU
