While working 40meters today I was advised that the frequency that I was calling on was "reserved" not "in use". Never heard this before.

I'm sorry, I reserved this thread for a different conversation, can you please move on?

Maybe you should have asked him to provide the FCC Reservation paperwork. Yea, no such thing. If it's not in use, it's free to use. No such thing as a "reservation"

No such thing as a "reserved" frequency.

There are informal agreements regarding frequencies for modes, ie RTTY, AM etc. but nothing is "reserved" especially for some net.

If there is not an active QSO in progress, NO frequency is "reserved"

Sounds like a net to me.

That's what I thought. Checked the freq. before I called and didn't hear any activity. Just never heard the term "reserved" before. Always thought it was "in use".

If no one is in active QSO, the frequency is TOTALLY AVAILABLE FOR USE.

Period. Doesn't matter what frequency it is or what it might "historically be used for"
