In the past two months, I dove into digital modes and have used SSTV, PSK31, RTTY, Olivia, and Feld Hell. A number of the hams I’ve QSO’d with were also new to these modes, so excitement all around. For me, the “coolness” of these modes is not so much the QSO itself but the art of using FLDigi (in my case) to find the signals, reading up on the different signals, doing digital contests, digital nets, etc. Using the modes is helping me learn more about digital communications — more than I have ever learned before with the dry (to me, anyway) reading material.
I started with PSK and Feld Hell apps on my iPad, and an RTTY app on my Android phone, just putting my headphones on the phone to xmit/rx. Even did my first RTTY contest a few weeks back like that, using a Bluetooth keyboard that had a stand for my phone! Once I got the mechanics of using the keyboard to control the phone, it was a blast. I updgraded to my daughter’s old MS Surface Pro 4 laptop for a small fee of $250 and dl’d FLdigi, got a SignalLink USB, and I’m loving it. Lots of fun for sure. Learning curve to do digital was minimal, and I’ve added a ton of new modes to my primary mode of phone.
I’m gonna do just that next time I have some day time available for operating. Thanks for the reminder!
Not at all jealous, just not a lover of ft8.
... why can't I ever think of a last line for my limerick to rhyme?
Jealous no, tried it months ago, you could switch on and leave for hours, come back and have loads of "dx" sorry just wasn't for me.
