The Bellbrook Amateur Radio Club (BARC)
will commemorate the 101st anniversary of powered flight by honoring the pioneers of powered flight, Orville and Wilbur Wright.

After extensive experimentation with wing structures, motor control, propellers, and various mechanical systems, the brothers left Dayton, Ohio, for Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, to test their aircraft in the consistently windy conditions along the coast. On December 17, 1903, with Orville at the controls, their flying machine flew 120 feet in 12 seconds. Two additional flights that day covered 175 and 200 feet, reaching an altitude of 10 feet.

On December 17, 2024, 1400 to 2359UTC (9am until 7pm EST), members of the club will operate a special event station from the BARC clubhouse, 51 South East Street in Bellbrook. Our entrance is located at the south end of the three-story building. We are on the lower floor, first door on the right if you're in the area. We have four stations that will be occupied by licensed operators contacting other licensed amateur radio operators who will communicate from all over the United States and the world via high frequency radio transmissions.

A color flyer will be emailed to each amateur radio operator who contacts the club on the radio and requests a flyer.

    For additional information, please contact:

    President, Ray Hitt, N8VMX@bellbrookarc.org or
    Secretary, Jim Gifford James.gifford55@gmail.com

Be sure to check out the QRZ page for the W8W Special Event Station, Club callsign W8DGN, or the Bellbrook ARC Website

Note that the operating times above are Eastern Standard Time in the US.

Jump it was but not flight. Machine as it was constructed was not suitable to fly. I know, it is presented as fly in US for reason "we were the first", but rest of the world does not thing it was a flight... Similar to Marconi and Italy...Why continue to pretend alternative picture of real history? Call it: The first filmed machine jump. It was nothing more than filmed unsuccessful attempt to build a flying machine. Fast boats can make a bigger jump than this machine (baset on same physical principles) and no one considers it flight. Just a bit objectivity please to make world better and without lies.

I remember when this video (TV Commercial) came out in the mid 80's. Still puts a smile on my face.

There should be extra recognition/points if contact is made at 10:35 a.m. (Eastern Time), since that was when the first flight took place.

Boats may jump farther than 120 ft., but they don't operate in "manned, controlled, powered flight," a realm belonging to aircraft.

It was windy that day. The Wright Flyer was heavy and underpowered, but it was manned, under engine power, navigable, witnessed and
documented, and indeed flew. There may have been others, but if the event wasn't/isn't properly documented and publicly demonstrated, and reproducible, it doesn't deserve a place in the history books. (Looking at you, Gustave Whitehead.)

There are more well documented flight before Wright in several countries. Only problem is it was not in US and it was before Wright brothers. Gustave Whitehead is only one example... he was Bavarian in US
I do not understand how truth can be changed so easily... Wright brothers documented as they did not succeed and this not successful try is presented as successful flight... Do you see this cube? It's the first well-documented sphere.
    evidence:
    - Machine is unable to fly due its construction. It was analyzed by engineers many times in many countries
    - jump was not controlled - no possible to change height or length of "fly"
    - Well documented that it was not successful try of fly they did just one jump and nothing more.
No problem with activity at some anniversary, but it is well to know the truth is a bit difference... I personally prefer Gustave Whitehead or at radio Nicola Tesla

OK Jan - you have made and remade your point. Please don't turn this "Amateur Radio News" article promoting a ham radio special event into a debate about "first flight".

Feel totally free to start a "Who was really the first to fly a self-powered airplane?" in perhaps the "Ham Radio Life" section.

But this "News" article is intended to simply promote a ham radio special event around a historical event, that regardless of opinions, still stands in fact, as a historical event.

    That would be greatly appreciated.

I just have a little problem with the name because it's not right. It wasn't the first and it wasn't fly. Even though we're only limit to the US territory, that's not right. If it will be the anniversary of the Wright brothers attempt to fly, then it will be OK.
To understand meaning that something is wrong on it, imagine I will create special event station at anniversary of the first man on the moon and on picture will be African on wooden rocket powered by compressed air in year 1962... just after Gagarin.... simply imagination
But of course no problem it is allowed to create any special station one want... Maybe I really will create firs man on the moon anniversary station with wooden rocket and mechanical computer, astronaut fastened to the seat by Van Allen radiation belt :)
OK, it was my last comment. I respect other opinion even I think it is not right. Maybe I will have QSO with the station if I will hear. Not problem for me. It is just my opinion. I do not need to convince someone that it is so it is.

Spoken like someone who has never been to Kitty Hawk.
You are right, it's YOUR opinion and you are entitled to it.
Life has also taught me it's OK for someone to be wrong.

Yes - that was addressed earlier. Simple posting error that was already covered.
