^ Yes just have ARDEN folks setup their systems on Public Wifi channels. The Public can use with their devices, not a Ham chained to a Desk with a hardware VOIP phone go box.

It would be pretty easy to do by anyone today. Get a starlink internet antenna, then link from there to multiple other sites using Ubiquiti. One satellite internet node could feed multiple hot spots this way. Relatively inexpensive and easy for anyone with rudimentary skills to accomplish. Once wifi is available, people use their existing devices to connect and communicate. Maybe need to limit access speed to end users to keep them from using bandwidth for youtube and tictock, etc.

Just up in a proxy that blocks all video and other broadband besides voice

Or setup a QoS or similar to limit bandwidth to 500kB or so. This would allow them to check e-mail and other websites, but make the data hungry sites impossible to use decently.

And set up a pi hole in front to block all the obnoxious large payloads like auto play videos, all advertising, etc.

BTW wifi is single duplex, so things like VoIP are discouraged, especially when there's more than a small number at the same time.

Or perhaps run the network data stream through a 1200 bps serial PPP link to force compliance to packet radio norms so amEmcomm can compete. Equity you know.

The above joke is on me of course as I still enjoy packet and how thrifty it forces one to be with limited resources. No dreaded HTML messages sent through my links ;)

NO, they do not need you and your yellow vest and 7 HTs strapped on.

Why does the FCC want to make more rules they can't or are not willing to enforce?

More EMAs and even our local Red Cross and hospitals have installed amateur radio equipment and have amateur radio volunteers. The key is to pick the right people who know how to use all the tools in the toolbox, GMRS, Cell Mesh, Agency equipment and more. There is still a place for amateur radio in disaster services, but it takes the right people, with the right attitude, who are willing to train regularly. Our local EMA has many volunteer teams, Communication, Operations, Drone, Fire Rehab to name a few.

This has nothing to do with that. It's about hardening the communications infrastructure that the public uses (eg, phones, Internet) to be able to call 911, and the communication infrastructure that public safety users use.

If Hams would work on Emcom as the Militia model rather than always try to ingratiate themselves with perceived power all this would be different. The lusting after governments acceptance is going nowhere.

Government only wants volunteers as a Human sacrifice. One has to be pretty thick not to see that.

We need to fill the "when all else fails" box. That means counting only on ourselves and preparing for that independent of any agency. If we are called upon, respond but stop begging for scraps from the captains table.

We forget were Americans and see and do things differently than the rest of the world. Independence means something. Something we have forgotten. We are here if government fails.

Let the wannabes do their thing and ignore them. We all know they are useless.

    Yes. A very big problem.

I think of hams as Joe Citizen with a license, so, yes, anyone can do it; even hams. All the tools are available. Anyone who can write an app and can build a network (HS students, for example) can contribute.

As of the past 20+ years, our most vocal members in the ham emcomm "leadership" have been stuck on that one-trick-pony we all know and love, and Newington is still trying to refarm the bands to exercise the pony "when all else fails." Someday they may wake up and realize time has passed and different, more effective tech, is widely available.

I can't tell you the number of times I have basically said this very thing over on eham and possibly here too.
ARES needs to quit being a solution looking for a problem.
ARES needs to set themselves up so they are FULLY self sufficient, Meaning bring everything with you including your coffee, for EVERY member.
HF for ARES needs to be basically forgotten. It's all but useless in this day and age for communications. There are a few situations that may arise that you would need to talk more than 50 miles for but they are few and far between in most area's of the country.

Preparedness is more than having a 20 dollar Funkybowel radio on the local repeaters and a vest.

I have said more than once that we need to be looking at AREDN and other types of standup MESH networking with WiFi at the end points to provide email services to wireless devices for the general public in shelters and the like. Do things that the government doesn't care about but will earn you points with them. If you can ship email then all those people that would otherwise be hounding the Red Cross and government officials about getting access to communicate to their families will take a big load off them. Deal with Joe average and you will learn that NO is not easy for them to understand at times.

The other thing that WiFi and MESH brings to the table is data transfers when utilities are down. Being able to send real time video and photos of an area of interest to the government officials is a huge tool for them they typically don't have. If you can provide that you are needed. If you can provide comm's via some 20 dollar POS radio that YOU have to operate because YOU are the only ham around is totally useless.

If you REALLY what to do something useful, create a COMM center that is NOT the county EOC or other government building. Get a real generator and the needed stuff for it to run independent of everything else. Setup a data link to the government EOC with a VoIP phone switch and data transfer to a PC at that site that ANYONE there can access. Start looking at how to extend the MESH network to fire houses, police stations and hospitals that would provide both a data link and VoIP phone to them. Make it all robust so there is no single point of failure that would stop the whole system.

Fifty years ago this was a pipe dream to be sure. Today, you can get most of the pieces for it on eBay for very little money and build a monster for next to nothing that is public safety level redundant and resilient.

Good idea... and no Part 97 required... and that's okay.
