    Amateur Radio Newsline reports...

The FCC has assigned new radio channels for use by public safety agencies performing inter-agency coordination. For decades, agencies have called upon the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service to assist with this function.

As of 2006, this Amateur service may "may be a thing of the past as the Federal Communications Commission acts to create thirty-two radio channels that public safety officials from various agencies nationwide could use to communicate directly."
