FCC approves first 'power-at-a-distance' wireless charging device

What about the health issues that arise when you have transmitter powerful to charge a battery at home radiating everything around you!!

I can not believe that people would be willingly radiate home, family and kids for the convenience of wireless charging!!!

I wonder if this company also insures against cancer or do the have a health effect waiver?
"... can not be held liable in case of (unproven) side effects such as cancer since it was approved by the FCC...."

Simple Guidelines for Charging Lithium-based Batteries

Turn off the device or disconnect the load on charge to allow the current to drop unhindered during saturation. A parasitic load confuses the charger.

Charge at a moderate temperature. Do not charge at freezing temperature. (See BU-410: Charging at High and Low Temperatures)

Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better.

Not all chargers apply a full topping charge and the battery may not be fully charged when the “ready” signal appears; a 100 percent charge on a fuel gauge may be a lie.

Discontinue using charger and/or battery if the battery gets excessively warm.

Apply some charge to an empty battery before storing (40–50 percent SoC is ideal). (See BU-702: How to Store Batteries.)

Wasn't it "NICOLA TESLA" who'd been working on transferring electricity (WIRELESSLY) back in the 1920s & 30s??? Honestly everybody who's working on that type of "TRANSFERENCE" is REALLY hanging onto "TESLA's COAT-TAILS" NOW!!!

FCC Certification has been privatized for over a decade, with the vast majority of certifications being issued by the Telecommunications Certification Bodies (TCBs) authorized by the FCC. There is nothing out of the ordinary with the certification, other than the nature of the device. The unit operates in an Industrial, Scientific and Medical band, as an ISM device under Part 18 rules. As an ISM device, it could be allowed unlimited radiated emissions in the ISM band, subject only to the limits of human exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Under the rules, within an ISM band, no protection is offered from interference from the fundamental signal of ISM devices. So other uses of that band, such as Part 15 baby monitors, and even licensed users, must accept any interference from an ISM device.

Those inductive chargers have not been Certified because it is not intended that they radiate, so they have been Verified under the rules (essentially self tested by the manufacturer). This device intentionally radiates an EM field, so even though it's an ISM device, it needed to be Certified.

The efficiency of this device will be relatively low, compared to inductive chargers such as the popular ~200 kHz Qi wireless charging pads.

Interestingly, although ISM devices are allowed to cause interference in the ISM bands, because an ISM device does not transmit information, it is not offered any protection FROM interference from other devices.

And, IMHO, in the long run, convenience will win. Right now, I need to plug in my phones to charge from time to time. Although an inductive charging pad can be reasonably efficient, I still need to put my phone on it, aligned properly, to charge it. If we could charge our small devices simply by having them in the room where the charging will take place, that convenience would outweigh some abstract concept such as efficiency. That may not apply in this case, because this appears to have a limit of 3 feet distance, not the width of the average room.

There is also the question of the design of the phone itself. Most phones charge by wire. That charging port does not receive 900 MHz signals, so one would have to connect the device being charged to a 900 MHz receiver of some sort. Some devices are manufactured with built-in wireless Qi receivers, so they can be charged wirelessly. None are yet manufactured to receive this charging signal, so there is a very real chicken-and-egg problem here. Yes, one can connect the charged device to a wireless receiver, but that is not very different in kind than connecting the device to a wired charger.

If the device draws 10 watts, to generate 4 watts of radiated power, to generate 1 watt of charging power, that would be 10% efficient. Howeber, that charging power would be convenient. IF it operated continuously, 24/7, at 10 watts of draw, that would draw approximately 600 kWh/year. At 12 cents per kWh, the national average, the device would, at most, cost $6/month to operate.

It's an interesting technology, but until we see devices manufactured to receive wireless charging signals, true wireless charging may be a bit far off for us as a society.
