So, easy for anyone with some know how to hack?
Easy with very minimal know how to _decode_ the signals. Lots of nefarious things you could do with that data, eg. figuring out when people were not home. The program is called RTLAMR and is easily available.
Given the redundancy of the system, and the multiple datapaths, I would not attempt to speculate on how difficult it would be to try to modify or spoof the data.
Interesting. Not being a computer wizard I had heard of some customers getting hacked and somehow stealing their power?
Seems the CIA is happy with the meters as it gives them a boat load of surveillance data on those customers with smartmeters.
Never mind saw it was a story from California thought it might be about them seceding from the Union.
