I have a 5 character call sign. I tried to create a gmail address using my call sign but cannot do so because the call is too short. Any suggestions?

Maybe try another provider where it's not too short.

Variants like that work well and are in very common use with Gmail users.

Or do as others have suggested and go with a provider who doesn't limit you to 6 or more characters.

Simple: Just find the right email provider which will accept your callsign as email address!
    as mine:
    AE1N@ymail.com

Join the American Radio Relay League they'll provide you with your call. ARRL.net
Which is probably the most used amateur radio call group
