Ham radio is a rich man's hobby if you're merely an appliance operator with all new gear. However, if you like to homebrew and you scour hamfests for deals, the price goes way down. Heck, I find myself homebrewing things that I could afford to buy just because of the knowledge that's gained from rolling your own.
