ARLD033 ITU Assigns New Prefix for Niue: E6A-E6Z

On August 3, the ITU updated its Table of International Call Sign Series to reflect a call sign change for Niue. The island will now have the entire E6 prefix block. Niue -- an island approximately 1500 miles northeast of New Zealand -- is a self-governing island nation that has been in free association with New Zealand since 1974. Prior to the change, the island used ZK2. According to the CIA World Factbook, Niue is about 1.5 times the size of Washington, DC, and has a population of almost 1300 people.

HEARD ISLAND 2014 ---> Updates of the team and the Project Description
(version 4.3) are now available at www.heardisland.org. "You will see in
the Project Description that we have developed a wide-ranging scientific
program, including radio operations (the DXpedition), real-time
communications, mountain science, biological science, atmospheric science,
astronomical science, documentation, and educational outreach. We are
proposing that the AAD collaborate on some of the research.
We are interested in establishing a collaboration with any person or group
that can fit into the research program (or extend it). The next NEWS update
will be on 15 September. The next round of team members will be announced
on 15 October, but if you are interested in joining the team (on the island
or offsite), we invite you to contact us anytime."

PT0S & 6 METRES ---> The PT0S team will be making a special effort to put
St. Peter and St. Paul Rocks on 6 metres during its 12-24 November
operation. "We have experienced 50MHz operators", they say, "and will be
taking high performance gear to effectively exploit openings. We'll operate
on SSB and CW and an additional effort will be made for 6m EME, during the
time when the moon is at the horizon". Please visit http://pt0s.com/ for
    further information.

QSL HK0NA ---> As of 8 August, all traditional direct requests received
through 31 July (with appropriate return funds) and all OQRS direct
requests received through 5 August have been processed and mailed - a grand
total of 74,190 QSOs. "The QSL process has been temporarily 'paused' while
we give all of our special QSL processors and handlers some time off", N2OO
says. "We will re-start direct QSLing in early September, then start on the
OQRS bureau requests soon after". The logs were uploaded to LoTW on 10
August, but some QSOs are missing. N2OO is aware of the problem and is
    workimg on this with ARRL.

QSL VU7M ---> The new address where to send direct cards for the current
DXpedition to Minicoy Island (AS-106), Lakshadweeps [425DXN 1109] is: 9026
Phillip Dorsey Way, Columbia MD 21045, USA. This is just a mail drop, as
the actual QSL cards will be mailed from India. Include a self addressed
label (SAE non required) and at least two US dollars.

    QSL YV7/UA9YAB & YV5/UA9YAB ---> The QSL cards for the late UA9YAB's
    operations from IOTA groups SA-012 (YV7/UA9YAB) and SA-035 (YV5/UA9YAB)
will be handled by UA9YPS. QSL direct only to Aleksandr Y. Shishkin, ul.
Kalinina 18-18, Rubtsovsk, Altajskij kr., 658213, Russia.

    + SILENT KEY + Aleksandr A. Vedernikov, UA9YAB (aka XU7AEQ and JT0YAB)
died unexpectedly on 9 August during his vacation in Venezuela (YV7/UA9YAB
and YV5/UA9YAB) [425DXN 1099]. He was only 50 years old, and leaves behind
his wife Nataliya and two children. DX World.net has now set aside a
dedicated page (http://dx-world.net/ua9yab-family/) for donations to be
sent to help offset the high costs for returning Alex's body home.

wide. There is no special requirements. IIHG sponsors several special
and attractive operating awards. The main award is the Nusantara Award.
The main goal of this award is to encourage amateur radio activities
from as many different islands as possible in the vast archipelago of
Indonesia. For complete details and rules on the Nusantara Award, visit
    the following Web pages: http://www.nusantaraaward.com

ZA, ALBANIA. Operators Petr/OK1FCJ, Pavel/OK1DX and David/OK6DJ will be
active as ZA/homecall between September 27th and October 3rd. Activity
will be on all HF bands, 160-10 meters, including 30/17/12 meters, using
CW, SSB and RTTY. The team will also be active in the CQWW DX RTTY Contest
(September 29-30th) as ZA/OL8R. The equipment will be an Elecraft K3 and
    Kenwood TS850 into a SpiderBeam (20/15/10m), 40-10m vertical, 80m dipole
    and 160 meter LW. QSL ZA/OL8R and ZA/OK1FCJ via OK1DRQ, ZA/OK1DX via
OK1DX, and ZA/OK6DJ to LoTW, eQSL, by the Bureau or direct to home
    callsign.

ZD9, GOUGH ISLAND. Look for Paul, ZD9KN, to be active from Gough Island
(AF-030) until September 31st. He is there working as a radio/electronics
technician. Activity will be on 160-10 meters using only SSB. His equipment
is a Yaesu FT-2000 into a directive Multiband and Inverted V dipole. For
now the QSL is only via LoTW. All information to receive a QSL card
will be published very soon on QRZ.com. The log is also uploaded to
ClubLog. LAST MINUTE UPDATE (Per QRZ.com): Paul states, "ZD9KN log will
be uploaded in its entirety to LoTW within 1 year from the end of the
DXpedition. The information for the QSL will be published after the end
of the DXpedition. The QSL card is via my QSL Manager IZ0UIM or LoTW.
The internet connection is not very good unfortunately, so there may be
delays in response." Paul recommends that you check his log before sending
a QSL card because there are PIRATES using his callsign. There was a
report of a PIRATE on Sunday morning, August 19th, at 0955z.

    DX information.

NH8, SWAINS ISLAND (Press Release). The following press release was sent
    out on August 22ndt [edited]:" Swains press release # 3 Aug. 22 2012 --
The leaders are happy to report that the DXpedition cargo has arrived
in American Samoa. The international team of 20 operators are excited
about this tent and generator operation. The island ranks number 31 in
the DX Magazine most wanted list. Swains is about one mile in circumference
has only five permanent residents and no infrastructure.
The team will be running seven stations from 6 to 160 including 60m.
They will be on CW, SSB and RTTY around the clock for 14 days. Great
emphasis will be in working European stations. Plans are to update logs
on a daily basis by satellite phone. Because there is no regular internet
service, the team will have two pilot stations. Valerie, NV9L, will be
the North American pilot while Col, MM0NDX, will do the honors for Europe.
They and John/K6MM, the webmaster, will be the only contact to the team
    for their 14 day stay.
Due to changes in airline flights, they are now scheduled to depart
American Samoa on Sept. 4th, for the 23 hour boat ride to Swains. Every-
thing will then be off loaded and taken ashore by a small boat. Along
with the radio equipment, antennas, food, and tents, are 19 drums of
    gasoline for the seven generators.
The team of highly experienced DXers, contesters and Dxpeditioners are
    9V1FJ, AA4NN, DJ2VO, DL3DXX, K5AB, K9CS, K9CT, K9NW, N2TU, N4HH, N6HC,
    N6HD, NA6M, ND2T, SM5AQD, W6KK, W8GEX, W8HC, W8TN and WB9Z. There have
been several requests to listen into the general band, so please listen
    to the operator's instructions.
We are most grateful to NCDXF, INDEXA, and all clubs and individuals
who have supported us. Like all major DXpeditions today, this is a very
expensive trip. Total costs are estimated to be 200,000 USDs. Each member
has paid 8000 USDs, plus his cost to get to American Samoa. Anyone who
wants to help, can go to our website, <www.nh8s.org> and click on the
donations link. We are most appreciative to any and all DXers that
contribute to help defray the cost of the trip.
OQSL is available on the website for your convenience. QSL manager for
cards is Joe Blackwell, AA4NN, and requests should be sent to him at:
    Swains Island DXpedition
    P.O. Box 5005
    Lake Wylie, SC 29710
    USA

LoTW will be posted six months following the DXpedition.

We would like to give special thanks to our support crew who has worked
    very hard for us. They include DL9RCF, I8NHJ, K6MM, MM0NDX, N1DG, N4XP,
    N7CQQ, NV9L, W6XA, W8AEF, W8CAA and Margarett Blackwell XYL of AA4NN.

ZL9, CAMPBELL ISLAND (Update/Press Release)[edited]. The following was
release on Tuesday, August 21st, on the ZL9HR DXpedition Web page at:
    http://www.campbell2012.com

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Thanks for your interest in the upcoming ZL9HR DX-pedition to Campbell
    Island.

At this writing we are on schedule and the project planning is well
underway. The team is busily working on all aspects of the DX-pedition.
As you may know, we have the landing permit in-hand and also the radio
    license / call sign.

Some examples of what’s happening behind the curtain at the moment
    include:
    - Station location (as defined by the permit)
    - Antenna placement planning (as defined by the permit)
    - Discussions on propagation behavior and how we will adjust for
    conditions
    - Operator mode preference
    - Equipment testing and preparation for sea shipment
    - Contract finalization with the boat that will take us to Campbell Island
    - Generator testing (state-of-the-art Yamaha machines) and their
    preparation for shipment
    - Petrol estimates (for generators), procurement, and planning for sea
    transit
    - Preparation and submission of the required DX Team Safety and Communic-
ations plans to the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DoC)
    - Coordination of team arrival in NZ, hotels and local transportation to
and from boat at Bluff, NZ
    - A DoC requirement for landing on Campbell Island is each team member
must have emergency medical evacuation insurance (purchased by the
    individual team members)
    - Up-front payments and deposits
    - Scheduled the quarantine inspection (All of our gear must be unpacked
(then repacked) for inspection before departing NZ)
    - We're beginning to receive donations from the major DX Foundations,
DX Clubs and individuals from around the world.

With the individual operators funding the up-front cost of the DX-
pedition and their personal travel / living and while in NZ we will
continue to seek assistance from the global DX-community.

We appreciate the interest and support from the global amateur community
    and especially from the:
    - Northern California DX Foundation;
    - The American Radio Relay League’s Colvin Award Committee;
    - The German DX Foundation, and
    - The Lone Star (Texas) DX Association

Each who have made significant contributions, and the other clubs and
    individuals who provided financial support.

Our major corporate sponsor, to date, is Spiderbeam.

Of course, the overall sponsor of this DX-pedition is the Hellenic
Amateur Radio Association of Australia who is providing nearly all of
the equipment that will be used on Campbell Island.

We'd be remiss if we didn't recognize the New Zealand Department of
Conservation for their support of this DX-pedition. The DoC is permitting
us to use several of the existing buildings which will provide shelter
from the weather which we expect to be cool, windy and wet.

Our QSL policy, as described on the QSL Page, should satisfy the DX
    community:
    - On-line uploads via satellite phone to ClubLog
    - LoTW upload shortly after the DX-pedition
    - LoTW confirmations at no charge for all contacts, no restrictions
    - OQRS will be available at a reasonable donation to cover mailing
    expenses
    - Direct QSLs with envelope $2USD, (1 IRC + 1 USD) or 1 Euro for
    all destinations
    - Buro cards to EB7DX at no charge

QSLing doesn't get any better than this!

Our goal is to give out as many All Time New Ones as humanly possible
and to fill as many band slots as we can.

Thanks again for your interest and support. We’ll update you again
    next month.

    73, ZL9HR team"

    * PLEASE NOTE: The report "could" contain "Pirate/SLIM" operations or
more likely a "BUSTED CALLSIGN". As always, you never know - "Work
    First Worry Later" (WFWL).

3A, MONACO. Nobby, G0VJG, will be active as 3A/G0VJG between October
1-5th. Activity will be on the HF bands using 100 watts and SSB only.
    QSL via G0VJG.

5X, UGANDA (Update). Nick, G3RWF, informs OPDX that he is returning to
Uganda on October 16th, and expects to be on the air probably the next
day as 5X1NH. He mentions that he will return to the UK on December 12th,
and states, "Same set-up as usual - mixture of bands and modes". This
probably means 80-10 meters, and he prefers to operate CW, but will also
be on the Digital modes with some SSB. There will be no 160m (no room
for an antenna) and 6 meters is not licensed. Operations will be limited
because Nick does voluntary work at the "Mountains of the Moon University"
in Fort Portal, so activity will be during his off hours. He adds that he
is carrying all of his gear there (rig is K3). Nick has put over 100k QSOs
in the log from Uganda and is looking for more! If you hear Nick's callsign
before the 16th of October it is a PIRATE!. ADDED NOTE FROM NICK: He will
be active as 5B/G3RWF during the month of September while on holiday.

9G, GHANA. Emil, ZS6EGB, is back in Ghana as of July 20th, under a new
assignment with the Mining Group operating in the Central Province. He
states, "We are setting up a new Clinic and will only be operational after
my vacation." Please look for 9G5ZS on most bands. His usual setup will
be an Icom 706mkIIG and a HyGain Vertical plus Dipoles for the low bands.
    QSL via ZS6EGB (see QRZ.com).

AH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Look for 19 year old university students Seiya
    "Sam"/JE1XUZ (KH0XH) and Yuzo/JQ2WTT (KH0XW) to be active as AH0BT from
the Saipan BBQ Contest Club on Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan Island
(OC-086) between August 29th and September 2nd. Activity will be focused
on the All Asian DX SSB Contest (September 1-2nd) as a Multi-Single
    entry. QSL via 7L1FPU.

AH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Kuroi, JH0MGJ/AL5A, will be active as AL5A/AH0
from Saipan Island (OC-086) between September 7-9th. He states that
he will be looking "for many friends who will be in the Europe". QSL
via LoTW. If you want a paper QSL (if it is necessary), his QSL Manager
    is JA7JEC.

C2, NAURU ISLAND. Yoosuke "Yuki", JH1NBN, will be active as C21BN (and
possibly a special callsign) from Nauru between September 3-10th. Activity
will be on 40-10 meters using simple antennas with 100 watts. QSL via
    his home callsign.

C6, BAHAMAS. Robert, AK4BM, will be active as C6AGT from Green Turtle Cay
(NA-080) between December 2012 and January 2013 (Specific dates were not
provided). He plans to have a beacon (most likely on 10 meters) active
during the day and will be operating SSB, and possibly the Digitial modes
(PSK31 and JT65) during the evenings on various bands between 40-10 meters,
as conditions permit. He may also operate from other uninhabited islands
around Green Turtle Cay using a low power transmitter (Yaesu 817nd) using
wire antennas, and probably on the 20 meter band. All QSL cards will be
returned with a photo QSL from the island upon his return. Please send
them direct to his home callsign AK4BM (w/SASE/Green Stamps appreciated,
    but not required).

E5, NORTH COOK ISLANDS. After trying to head back to South Cook Islands,
the sail boat developed some problems and the skipper decided to take
Andy/AB7FS (E51AND) and his XYL Kathy back to Palmerston Atoll (OC-124),
North Cook Islands. The couple will now stay until the middle of September.
Look for Andy to be active mainly on CW around 14048 kHz. He often checks
into the ANZA Net on 14183 kHz after 0500z. QSL via AB7FS.

EA8, CANARY ISLANDS. Luis, EA8AY, from the Island of Tenerife (DIE S-012,
WLOTA 1276), announced that he will be in the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October
27-28th) as a Single-Op/Single-Band (??) entry. This will be his first SSB
contest. QSL via W2GR or LoTW. Visit his Web site at:
    http://www.ea8ay.com/ef8x

EL, LIBERIA. Look for the VooDoo Contest Group to once again be active
from here between November 21-27th. This is their 24th straight year.
Operations will be from a location just South of Monrovia, the capital
of Liberia. Their main goal is to be an entry in the CQWW DX CW Contest
(November 24-25th) as a Multi-Multi category using the callsign EL2A.
Outside of the contest the operators will use their own personal call-
    signs. Operators mentioned are Ned/AA7A (EL2NS), Roger/G3SXW (EL2A),
    Fred/G4BWP (EL2WP), John/G4IRN (EL2RN), Mike/KC7V (EL2MF), Lee/KY7M
(EL2LF) and Bud/N7CW (EL2CW). QSL via their home callsign. Logs will be
    uploaded to LoTW.

an operator at HV3SJ), became a Silent Key (SK) on July 21st, at the age
of 90 years old. He served in the British Army during WW2, acted as teacher
for Pope Johannes Paulus and worked for the Swedish language program of
Vatican Radio among other things. For more info on Lars Rooth, SM1BOE, see:
    http://www.news.va/en/news/jesuit-father-lars-rooth-passes-away

Editor, became a Silent Key on August 18th.

Victor (Vic) Poor, W5SMM, of Melbourne, Florida, a recipient the
"ARRL President's Award" became a Silent Key on August 17th.

OPDX and its readers would like to send out our deepest sympathy to the
family and friends of the above mentioned.

PJ2, CURACAO ISLAND. The German team of Anja/DH2AK and Wilf/DL1HTM will be
active as PJ2/homecall from Curacao Island between August 26th and Sep-
tember 1st. They plan to operate from the PJ2A club station, mainly on
20 and 15 meters SSB. QSL via their home callsigns.

once again be active as V63PR from Micronesia, but this time from Falalop
Island, Ulithi Atoll, Yap State (OC-078), until September 3rd. It was

ZD9, GOUGH ISLAND (Bad and Good News). Its seems the DX community has
been duped on the Paul, ZD9KN, operation from Gough Island (AF-030).
ZD9KN is a PIRATE! Several sources report that Johan, ZS1A, has confirmed
that the callsign ZD9KN has never been issued. So, do not waste time
working this station if you hear him.
The good news is that Gerard ZS6KX/ZS7KX will be going to Gough Island
sometime September for one year. He is hoping to be issued the callsign
ZD9KX and is awaiting for the approval/license. QSL route TBA. Look for

5X, UGANDA (Update to OPDX.1076). Nick, G3RWF/5X1NH, announced this past
week he is "considering how best to get 160 on the air as it is the only
band I have not worked and reckon there must be un-met need!" He works
at a community university, so this is not a DXpedition but a solo operation
with plenty of time to get on the air. He is looking for help/advice in
erecting a simple antenna for 160m. Nick states, "I have access to roach
poles (30 footers) and can get max height of about 50 feet. No high trees
locally and insufficient room for beverage antennas. Contemplating a 50 ft
vertical with capacity top loading and some induction at the feed point.
I will get grounding as good as possible within local constraints (small
site, vehicles near the house etc). What do you think? Grateful for
advice on antennas. I would only work CW - lots of experience on HF (110k
QSOs from 5X on the other bands) but novice on 160 DX - advice (polite)
also invited on operating." Nick's E-mail address is:
    nick@henwood.demon.co.uk

6V, SENEGAL. Enrico, IK2FIL, will once again be active as 6V7X from Le
Calao between September 24th and October 4th. His activity will include

(??)/Low-Power entry. Operations will be on 80-10 meters using Elecraft
    K3 + KAT3 + KXV3 + KFL3A-400. Outside of the contest, Enrico will be on
30-10 meters RTTY only. QSL via LoTW, eQSL, by the BUREAU or direct to
IK2FIL. Visit his Web page at: http://6v7x.jimdo.com

7P8, LESOTHO (Update to OPDX.1051). Donovan, ZS2DL, has finalized his
team of operators and plans to arrive in Lesotho on November 21st, and
leave on December 4th. Operations will possibly take place between November
23rd and December 3rd. Naturally this means they will be an entry in the
CQWW DX CW Contest (November 24-25th). The callsign will 7P8D. Operators
mentioned are made up of three teams:
    South Africans - Donovan/ZS2DL (CW), Mitch/ZS2DK (SSB/RTTY) and

    Neil/VA7DX (CW)
Activity will be on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY with a minimum
of three stations (possibly 5 stations) on the air 24/7. The suggested
    frequencies are:
    CW - 1820, 3520, 7026, 10105, 14020, 18075, 21020, 24895 and 28015 kHz

ADDED NOTES: They will be listen up.

DX MAGAZINE'S MOST WANTED SURVEY. Carl, N4AA, editor of "QRZ DX" and
"The DX Magazine", reports to DXers: "Effective immediately the 2012
Most Wanted Survey form is available on the DX Publishing web site.
Please go to: www.dxpub.net and under the heading MOST WANTED SURVEY
you will find a link to the form. Click on '2012 SURVEY'.
Several prefixes are in BOLD type. These are ones which may cause
confusion due to their similarity, i.e. 3D2, VK9, VK0, etc. Please use
care when marking these to be sure the correct one is counted.
There are a few shown in RED. These indicate either an addition to the
list from last year or a change in the prefix (ZK2 is now E6).
There is a 'block' at the bottom of the form for you to send along any
comments, or to include any country that you need which is not on the
    list.
Please pass the word to your friends and to any DX clubs in your area
that the survey will be available until October 15th.
Thanks for your participation. 73, Carl, N4AA"

QRN and then I'll move the channel 4. It will take a few days after the
operation has started before I think about getting on 60 meters. San, K5YY,
will be my pilot station, and he will keep you posted on my activities.
I plan to look for Europe around 0400z during their sunrise. I think the
best time for NA should be between 0900z to 1100z. If you don't hear me,
feel free to call me as we may just be monitoring the channel. Keep in
mind I have my regular three hour shift to perform on the other bands,
and I'll work you guys in between. I'll try to have Jerry, WB9Z, who's a
great op and knows the 60m band, help me out. Please give your call many
times in order for us to get your call. I will have a beverage so that
will be helpful on receive. I am using a vertical I have made, and our
propagation charts says we should be able to work NA East coast at S3
levels. Let's hope this is the case to get some W1s and W2s in the log."

LAST MINUTE NH8S UPDATE BEFORE GOING TO PRINT:
    "SAFE LANDING ON SWAINS ISLAND
    SWAINS ISLAND 2012 NH8S DX-PEDITION
The weather was absolutely gorgeous on Swains Island for off loading
the cargo and David's crew. They arrived on Saturday afternoon, August 25,
2012, and had enough tide for the landing craft to off load most of the
fuel, supplies, and David and his crew. They immediately set up a couple
of tents at the beach for shading while awaiting supplies from the ship.
Then Sunday morning at high tide they off loaded the rest of the cargo.
The MV. Sili departed Swains Sunday @ Noon, and arrived Pago Pago early
    Monday morning August 27, 2012.
Hands down, the star of the show was this old landing craft that was
specially repaired for this operation. It was able to take all the cargo
fuel and passengers all the way to the beach with about 5 trips. David
and his crew are currently clearing areas to construct stations, sleeping
quarters and restroom facilities. Since the arrival of Team Leader Joe
Pater And Dietmar Kasper, David has been working with Joe on specific
    station Locations on the island.
Everything is in place and the SWAINS ISLAND 2012 NH8S DXPEDITION is
shaping up. We are finalizing our food supplies and await the arrival
of the rest Of the Team set for Monday night, September 3, 2012. Then
the Team and cooks will depart for Swains by noon September 4, 2012. The
only other thing that will make this more exciting is if the Team members
will bring with them all their “McGaiver Tricks” for 2 week survival on
a remote island like Swains Island. Oh I hope everyone likes fish because
the fish is really biting, and the reef is full of lobsters.
    - Alex Jennings"

    PACIFIC TOUR (5W, KH8 and Possibly ZK3). Opertaors John/N7CQQ and Ron/N6XT
are on an exploratory trip to American Samoa (KH8), Western Samoa (5W0)
and possibly Tokelau (ZK3). They depart the West Coast USA on Thursday,
August 30th, for Pago Pago, American Samoa, via Honolulu, Hawaii. John and
Ron will be in American Samoa to see the Swains expedition group off from
American Samoa. During the 30 day trip to the Samoa area, John and Ron
hope to get permission to visit Tokelau for two weeks. Their equipment
will be shipped to Samoa via US Postal Service to Pago Pago, American
Samoa. They will take a flight from American Samoa to Apia, Western
Samoa. They hope to find the Tokelau Visitors center open on Saturday
where they hope to get permission to visit Tokelau. They will return to
American Samoa to get their gear, see the Swains guys off and take a
ferry either to Tokelau or back to Western Samoa. If all else fails,
they will set up shop in Western Samoa to operate and continue to try
to get permission to visit Tokelau. Western Samoa has a few islands
that they might visit during their stay. John hopes to get his old 5W0QQ
callsign and Ron will get his special 5W callsign. They also might operate
from American Samoa during late September while they await their flight
home. John and Ron will both be using ICOM IC 7000 transceivers with
SteppIR BIG Vertical antennas. They will construct wire antennas for 80
and possibly 160 meters. They might have access to an amplifier on
Western Samoa, as John, N7CQQ, is taking two 3-500z tubes to Atsuo
Sakuma, 5W1SA, the only Ham at Western Samoa. Support for this mini
expedition was received from SteppIR Antennas, ICOM America, The DX

The overall results will be published in the January-February 2013 issue of
The DX Magazine, and the world-wide results will be posted to the web site

3D2, FIJI. Orlando, PT2OP, will be active as 3D2OP from Viti Levu between
October 7-14th. Activity will be holiday style on the HF bands. QSL via
his home callsign, direct (preferred) or by the Bureau.

3D2, FIJI. Cicero, PY7ZY, a member of the T30PY/T30SIX DXpedition,
will be active as 3D2ZY from Viti Levu, Fiji (OC-016), between October
11-15th, prior to his participation in the Tarawa Island, Western Kiribati,
DXpedition. Activity will be on the HF bands (specific bands were not
mentioned). QSL via his home callsign.

5H, TANZANIA. Arne, OH2NNE, will be active as 5H2DK from Moshi (KI86qq)
between October 2-17th. Also, there may be sporadic activity using a
portable setup from different locations between October 18-27th. This
will be a one man operation on SSB only. The setup includes an Icom
706 MKIIG boosted with an SG-500 to emit full 100 watts permitted, A3S
tribander (10/15/20) and dipoles for 12/17/40/80 meters bands. The portable
setup will include the Icom 706, an AH-4 mobile antenna tuner, a wire
antenna taped to a 6m fishing stick. Prelimanry TX frequencies plan is:
    3790, 7090, 14250, 18150, 21250, 24950 and 28450 kHz. The RX will be the
same as TX, 5up, 5-10up or 7.145 on 40m band. In order to maximize the
possibility for everyone to get into the log, Arne suggest/asks that
Europe call 5 up and outside Europe/Scandinavia to call 10 up. Arne
states, "We will try our best to serve everybody. Please behave according
to the rules in order to maximize QSO rate and minimize the number of
failed QSOs. We will try to upload the log, if possible." QSL via his
    home callsign.

    5W & KH8, SAMOA AND AMERICAN SAMOA (ZK3 Cancelled!). John, N7CQQ, sent
out the following press release on September 9th [edited]: "Well gang,
we have thrown in the towel on getting to Tokelau (ZK3) this time around.
The boat is normally scheduled for a two week turn around with about two
days to get to and two days to return from Tokelau. This month the boat
scheduled to go to Tokelau was tasked to do another cruse and another
boat was substituted from New Zealand. The weather has delayed the arrival
of the substituted boat from New Zealand, so we still don't know when the
boat to Tokelau will depart Apia, Western Samoa. But wait the story gets
    better!
The return boat trip is 'Scheduled' for departure from Apia, WS, on
September 18th. The return date to Apia, WS, after picking us up at
Tokelau is September 29th give or take weather and the changing schedule.
The scheduled flight returning Ron/N6XT and John/N7CQQ back home is
scheduled out of American Samoa on October 1st. So we have given up our

CQ NEWS. Richard, W2VU, sent the following press release on September 4th:
"CQ News: Bob Cox, K3EST, Retires as CQWW Contest Director - Bob Cox,
K3EST, has retired as Director of the CQ World Wide DX Contest and as
CQ's Director of Contesting, it was announced today by CQ Publisher Dick
Ross, K2MGA. Cox has been at the helm of the CQWW for 35 years, guiding
the contest through massive changes in technology - both on and off the
air - and CQWW's growth to become the world's most popular amateur radio
    contest.
Cox first took the reins of the CQWW in January, 1977, along with Larry
Brockman, WA6EPQ (now N6AR), who worked with Bob until March, 1994. In
making his announcement to members of the CQ World Wide Contest Committee,
Bob said, '35 years encompasses almost the entire history of modern
contesting. All the way from paper logs to today's need for instant
answers. During that time a framework was created that made the CQWW the
innovator of almost everything used in contesting today including log
checking.' He added, 'With that in mind…I am tired and wish to move on
    with other interests.'
Ross said the association had been long and fruitful, telling Cox 'it
has been an honor to have worked with you for these many decades. Your
contributions to the art and sport of amateur radio contesting have been
    enormous.'
Cox's retirement is effective immediately. A successor has not yet
    been named."

CU1-CU9, AZORES (Press Release - Dated September 4th)[edited]). Martti,
Laine, OH2BH, sent out the following:
DXERS TAKING A NEW COURSE IN AZORES, SEPTEMBER 28-30, 2012
    NEW WEBSITE GOES LIVE http://azores-islands-hunt.com

It is often said that DXers only work DX. More recently, we have seen
a healthy shift toward assisting the society they visit by helping locals
become stronger in Amateur Radio. Something totally new is now happening
in the CU-land – the Azores.
In recent years, the Azores Islands have balanced their agriculture and
livestock sectors through increased awareness of their great location
and unique landscape facilitated by the development of the local infra-
structure to receive more visitors from industrialized countries. Signif-
icant progress has been made in expanding tourist facilities, convention
hotels and holiday resorts. The Azores is now capable of accommodating
10,500 visitors per day. Additionally, the Azorean airline (SATA) is set
to serve many European destinations in addition to the US and Canada.
Radio amateurs are now stepping forward to help the Azoreans increase
the awareness of all of their nine islands, all within reach of SATA
airline service. Forming nine country teams with the locals, a total of
twenty DXers will fly in from SATA destinations to be on the air from
the nine islands as part of the 'Azores Nine Islands Hunt' - a unique
concept to bring everyone on board globally to share what the Azores can
    offer. Those participating are:

    United States: K2DO (YL), KI1U, KE3Q, N2GA
    Canada: VE3DZ, VE3FWA
    Germany: DJ9ZB, DF9TF
    United Kingdom: G3TXF, G7VJR
    Finland: OH2BH, OH8NC, OH9MDV
    Norway: LB3HC
    Belgium: ON7LX (YL), ON7TK, ON5NT
    Denmark: OZ7AM, OZ1IKY
Together with local hams from each island: CU1AAD, CU2BV, CU2CE, CU2DX,
    CU3CS, CU4AB, CU5AM, CU6AB, CU7CA, CU8AAE and CU9AC

The Amateur Radio group is also set to streamline emergency communic-
ations procedures throughout the archipelago. Together with the local
amateur population and administrators, they will be using this activity
to test the island-to-island amateur radio network. The ARRL is sending
their best resources, lending their expertise in this field.

The project website was launched today at <http://azores-islands-hunt.com>
for your review while you can also study the Azores at:

CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Update). The following was a press release dated
September 5th [edited]: "Planning continues for the October 8-17th DX-
pedition to Sable Island (CY0). Half of our gear is in storage at the
Maritime Air Charter facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We are in the
process of shipping the remaining gear. We have booked our flights to
Halifax. All remains on schedule for the CY0 operation to begin around
2300z on October 8th. As always, weather and flying conditions will
dictate the actual schedule. The aircraft has to land on the beach as
there is no "runway" on the island.
This operation will be highly focused on 10,12 and 15 meters where the
most demand for CY0 exists. We continue to discuss antenna options due
to the restrictive environment we will be operating under.
Ron and Murray will begin loading the Britten-Norman aircraft late in
the afternoon on October 7th. All gear must be weighed as we have a 1400
pound weight limitation, including our body weights. We will then watch
the weather very closely. On Monday morning, October 8th, Maritime Air
and the OIC on Sable have scheduled a 1200z call to determine if a flight
is GO/NO GO. More updates to follow.... WA4DAN/CY0 and AA4VK/CY0"
For more details and updates, visit: http://www.cy0dxpedition.com

meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. He also plans to be in the WAG
Contest (October 20-12th) and the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 27-28th).

    HS, THAILAND
(Yaesu Presents Radios to HS0AC in Thailand)). Press release
from Dennis Motschenbacher, K7BV, received on September 3rd: "I depart
Thailand early Tuesday morning after a number of days of DX pileups
along side some of the most enthusiastic and friendly hams in the world!
I will never forget my time here to present two Yaesu FT 2000D radios
(thanks to Yaesu President Mr. Jun Hasegawa) to the Radio Amateur Society
of Thailand headquarters station HS0AC that lost their radios during the
    terrible floods last year.
    http://www.qsl.net/rast/
    http://www.hs5ac.net/smf1112/smf/index.php?topic=749.0
I was delighted to find Thailand extremely "radio active" with over
300,000 hams; most on VHF. However, after seven years of waiting, the
Thai hams are once again able to test for a license that gives them the
HF bands. Over 40 have already passed the exam this year and at least
one more test is schedule in 2012. I understand that upgrade testing
will likely now occur three times a year meaning 100s of new HF operators
are about to appear on the HF bands.
All this is great news for hams around the world!
