    ANNOUNCEMENT [edited]

PT0S - DXpedition to St. Peter and St. Paul Rocks

June 30, 2012, Sao Paulo and Miami

The Araucaria DX Group, in conjunction with the TX3A Team, is pleased to announce a DXpedition to St. Peter and St. Paul Rocks, PY0S, under the callsign PT0S. The DXpedition will take place in the late November to mid December, 2012 time frame. The actual dates will depend on weather conditions and will be announced on the PT0S website, <PT0S.com>.

There has been an official ban on Amateur Radio activities from PY0S. Although the ban, which was created for environmental and safety reasons, remains in place, the Araucaria DX Group was given a special permit by Brazil's SECIRM (Secretaria da Comissao Interministerial para Os Recursos do Mar), the Brazilian Navy, Ministry of Environment and LABRE to conduct a two week long operation.

The operation will have a strong low band focus. There will be a dedicated 160 meter station operating on 160 meters from sunset to sunrise. A second station will be on 80 and 40 meters at night. During the day we will operate two stations on the higher bands -- and 6 meters -- based on conditions. RTTY will also be supported.

The DXpedition's goal is to give this rare and difficult entity to as many amateurs as possible, taking maximum advantage of this unique opportunity. The group will be using newly designed RX antennas and receiving equipment to allow small and QRP stations to work PT0S on all bands, but especially on 80 and 160 meters. For operating procedures and advice on how to maximize your chances of getting into the log, please visit <PT0S.com>.

All QSOs will be loaded onto LoTW within 36 hours of taking place.

Operators will be Fred Carvalho/PY2XB (PY2XB/PY0F, PQ0F, VP5/PY2XB, 8P9XB), Peter Sprengel/PP5XX/PY5CC (PY0FM, PW0T, HK0NA). Tomi Pekarik/HA7RY and George Wallner/AA7JV. Due to environmental considerations, we have been limited to four operators.

For further information and regular news updates please go to <PT0S.com>.

    About:

    The Araucaria DX Group

The Araucaria DX Group (GRUPO ARAUCARIA DE DX) was formed in the 70s by mostly Brazilian amateur radio enthusiasts. Today it has become a multi- national group focused on contesting and dxing. The group currently has 340 members, of which about 100 are from outside Brazil. The group includes 15 top of Honor Roll and several Contest Hall of Fame members. For details go to: http://www.araucariadx.com

    TX3A Team:

The TX3A Team of HA7RY and AA7JV have conducted a number of two-man DX- peditions to Chesterfield Reef (TX3A), Mellish Reef (VK9GMW), Serrana Bank - Bajo Nouveo (5K0T) and Willis Islets (VK9WWI). The team focuses on putting difficult places on the air, especially on the low bands.

Background on St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago

Due to their strategic importance, the Rocks of St. Peter and St. Paul are treated differently by the Brazilian government to other islands in its territory. The Secretariat of the Interministerial Commission for Sea Resources (SECIRM) manages the archipelago in a manner that maximizes protection of national and environmental interests in the region. The infrastructure of the archipelago is very complex. Researchers take turns constantly on the research station located on Belmonte islet. They conduct research in areas of geology, biology, oceanography, meteorology and other academic and national interest. The difficulties of access in terms of almost 1,000 km distance that separates this small part of the country from the continent, the absence of drinking water, the frequent earth- quakes; are just some of the difficulties encountered by the Brazilian government in managing the site.

As a consequence of several meetings with the Brazilian authorities, the organizers of the Expedition, represented by the Araucaria Dx Group's Chairman (PY5EG Atilano de Oms), had the opportunity to show the relevance of ham radio activity to the communications community as well how the DX- pedition intends to cooperate to meet the requirements of the occupation of the archipelago and demonstrate its compatibility with the ongoing activities. The Brazilian Navy through SECIRM is giving total support to the expedition.

Due the fact that the archipelago is a very important natural Brazilian reserve, a special permit from Ministry of Environment (ICMBIOS) has been issued (NR 01-2012).

The expedition has also received a fundamental support from the Brazilian Amateur Radio League LABRE, as well from ANATEL (Agencia Nacional de Tele- comunicacoes). A special call has been assigned PT0S. During all contacts with the Brazilian entities, we emphasized the importance of the work done by radio amateurs and reciprocity that could derive from this under- standing. The operation is aimed not only at bringing this rare location to the DX community, but also to demonstrate that Amateur Radio is in fact totally compatible with the scientific and environmentally sensitive nature of the St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago.

The Araucaria DX Group greatly appreciates the understanding and support of all its friends and Brazilian authorities.

    Additional Background:

The archipelago of St. Peter and St. Paul is a group of small rocky islands and rocky which is situated in the central equatorial Atlantic Ocean, lying 627 km from the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, 986 km the nearest point on the mainland and 1010 km from Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte. It was declared as part of the Brazilian territory, according to IBGE belonging to the state of Pernambuco, despite being closer to the state of Rio Grande do Norte. In 1998 a scientific station was opened on the island Belmonte, initiating the program Archipelago of Sao Pedro and Sao Paulo (Proarquipelago) administered by the Secretariat of the Inter- ministerial Commission for Sea Resources (SECIRM). The permanent presence of scientists in scientific station is required to prove the livability in the archipelago, which is seen as crucial for its international recognition as the archipelago as Brazilian territory.

Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, W2VU and N6PSE for the following DX information.

3D2C, CONWAY REEF (Press Release). Paul Ewing, N6PSE, sent out the following press release #1 on July 3rd: "The World-Wide DX Group, led by Hrane Milosevic-YT1AD, is pleased to announce our next DXpedition, as 3D2C from the remote South-Pacific atoll of Conway Reef. This Dxpedition will take place from September 24th to October 5th, 2012. The World-Wide DX Group is the same group which brought you the recent 3D2C Rotuma Island Dxpedition in September, 2011.
Our primary objective is to activate Conway Reef with a goal of providing as many DXers as possible a "new one" with this rare DXCC entity and, as a secondary objective, to give as many band-slots as possible. We will target European contacts during those periods when propagation is possible and we will ask JA and North America to stand buy during those brief periods when the bands are open to EU.
The team consists of sixteen operators including: Leader-Hrane Milozevic- YT1AD, Co-Leader Alex Romanov-UA4HOX, Co-Leader Paul Ewing-N6PSE, Dave Flack-AH6HY, David Jorgensen-WD5COV, Vasily Kozerodov-RW4NW, Dr. Alan Eshelman-K6SRZ-Team Physician, Alan Maenchen-AD6E, Sergej Yanovsky-RZ3FW, Craig Thompson-K9CT, Stanislav Vatev-LZ1CG, George Williams-N6NKT, Alexander Kuznetsov-RW3RN, Peter Sprengel-PY5CC and Mike Flowers-K6MKF. Our QSL Manager is Hrane Milosevic-YT1AD. We will have OQRS, we will accept direct and bureau QSL cards. We plan to upload our logs to Club Log on a daily basis.
At this time, we are seeking Foundation, Club and individual support for this Dxpedition. You can find out more about our plans at our website: http://www.yt1ad.info/3d2c/index.html
    Thank you,

CQ NEW (Press Release). Richard Moseson, W2VU, sent out the following press release on July 3rd: "Logbook of the World Support for CQ WPX Award Goes "Live" -- Participants in CQ magazine's WPX award program may now use the American Radio Relay League's Logbook of the World (LoTW) system to apply for the WPX award and its endorsements. Amateurs will be able to use LoTW logs to generate lists of confirmed contacts to be submitted for WPX credit. Standard LoTW credit fees and CQ award fees will apply. LoTW support for the WPX award went 'live' on July 2. Logbook of the World is the ARRL's electronic confirmation system for amateur radio contacts. It provides a confirmation when both stations in a contact submit their logs to the system and a match between the logs is confirmed.
The application process for the WPX award via LoTW is the same as applying for ARRL-sponsored awards (such as DXCC and Worked All States), according to ARRL, which adds that Logbook users will notice that a WPX account has automatically been created for them on their LoTW awards page. ARRL adds that amateurs wishing to apply for the WPX Award via Logbook of the World will pay 12 cents for each QSO they use in their application. A separate fee for the WPX Award (and endorsements) is payable to CQ: Subscribers will be charged $6 for each award, while non-subscribers will be charged $12 for each award. Endorsement stickers are $1 each. WPX is the first non-ARRL award supported by LoTW. Support for the rest of CQ's operating achievement awards - including Worked All Zones (WAZ), the USA-Counties Award (USA-CA) and the CQ DX and DX Field Awards - will be phased in over time.
ARRL (www.arrl.org) is the National Association for Amateur Radio in the United States and publisher of QST magazine. CQ Communications, Inc. <www.cqcomm.com> is publisher of CQ Amateur Radio magazine and is the world's largest independent publisher of amateur radio magazines, books and videos."

CY9, ST. PAUL ISLAND (Update). The CY9M Team posted the following press release (#3) on July 6th [edited]: "Very soon it's time for an inter- national team of 10 amateur radio operators to board their flights to Nova Scotia, Canada, to participate in the expedition to St. Paul Island, a top-40 'most wanted' DXCC. Quick Facts: CY9M St. Paul Island, July 26th-August 1st, 160-6 meters,QSL via M0URX.
Once the team arrives at St. Paul, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, we plan to unpack and prepare six Elecraft K3 transceivers, four amplifiers, raise three Hex Beams and a number of other antennas in order to be active all bands from 160 through 6 meters CW, SSB and Digital.
The power station consists of three generators that will constantly charge three large battery tanks for maximum efficiency. We plan to consume more that 500 litres of fuel, large amounts of camping food and other 'necessities', including several hundred litres of water – all of which are not found on the island.
The team, together with 2 tons of equipment and supplies, head out to sea on a 42 foot motor vessel on the evening of 25th July or on the morning of the 26th depending on weather. We expect to be active starting July 26th and continuously rock the bands until August 1st, weather permitting. Participation throughout the IOTA contest.
After the activity, all contacts will be verified via LoTW and for those who want paper QSL, Tim Beaumont, M0URX, lends us his excellent manager services. The log will be available through ClubLog, likely after the expedition.
The activity is supported both financially and through the loan of equipment by several large clubs such as NCDXF, GDXF, ARRL and companies like Elecraft, Acom and DX Engineering. But we are most proud that so many individual amateur operators and DX chasers contribute to the activity out of their own pocket.
If you would like to donate any amount to the CY9M St. Paul Island Dxpedition, please click here: http://www.cy9m.com/donor
Feel free to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the latest news updates.
We look forward to working you from St. Paul Island, a top 40 most wanted DXCC.

QSL MANAGER OF THE YEAR. The Golist QSL Manager Data Service is reviving its QSL Manager of the Year Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize the service of QSL Managers world-wide for the service they provide to the World Wide DX Community. Nominations for this award will be accepted by the Golist from DX and Contest clubs, world-wide, for the year of 2012. Each DX club and Contest club is encouraged to poll their members for their nominations for the Top 5 QSL Managers for 2012. The definition of a QSL Manager for this award is any person who confirms contacts via printed QSL Card for any station other than their Primary Call Sign. Each club should tabulate the votes of their members and submit to the Golist the Top 5 vote getters as voted by members of their club. Votes should be tabulated and sent to the Golist by August 1, 2012, to be eligible for the QSL Manager of the Year award. Each club world-wide may only send one submission for voting purposes. Records of submission will be maintained by the GOLIST. A plaque, donated by DX Publishing, Inc., publisher of QRZ-DX and THE DX MAGAZINE, will be awarded to the QSL Manager of the Year selected at the W4DXCC Convention held in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in September 2012. The recognized format for your club's submission is as follows: Club Name; Club Officer (Name, Call Sign, club office and email address); Top 5 QSL Manager Nominees (list name and callsign). In the subject line of your official email: *QSL Manager of the Year-2012*. Send to: <golist@gmail.com>. Ending Date: August 1, 2012.

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback during the rules review process," said Andy Blank, N2NT, Director of the WRTC2014 Rules Committee. "We wanted to release the rules prior to the 2012 IARU Championship so that potential competitors and the WRTC test stations would have the opportunity in 2012 and 2013 to practice under the rules". WRTC2014 will be a Two-Operator Two-Transmitter competition, where both stations will be permitted to transmit at any time. 3D2, CONWAY REEF (Update). Members of the World-Wide DX Group will be active as 3D2C from Conway Reef between September 24th and October 5th. Their primary objective is to provide as many DXers as possible with a "new one" with this rare DXCC entity and, as a secondary objective, to give as many band-slots as possible. They would like to focus on European contacts which is the most difficult area to work especially during those periods when propagation is possible, so they ask that JA and North America to stand-buy during those periods. Activity will be on 160-2 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY, SSTV and PSK31. See OPDX.1045 for suggested frequencies. Currently, the Multi-national team consists of 15 operators: Hrane/YT1AD (Leader), Alex/UA4HOX (Co-Leader), Paul/N6PSE (PR & Co-Leader), Dave/AH6HY, David/WD5COV, Vasily/RW4NW, Alan/K6SRZ (Team Physician), Alan/AD6E, Sergej/RZ3FW, Craig/K9CT, Stanislav/LZ1CG, George/N6NKT, Alexander/RW3RN, Peter/PY5CC and Mike/K6MKF. QSL Manager is YT1AD. There will be an OQRS available for direct and Bureau QSL cards. They expect to upload their logs to ClubLog on a daily basis. PLEASE NOTE: They are seeking support from Foundations, Clubs and individuals for this DXpedition. Details are available at:

CU1-CU9, AZORES (Press Release - Dated August 14t)[edited]:
"ALL NINE AZORES ISLANDS, CU1 THROUGH CU9, ACTIVATED AT ONCE
Are You Ready to Fly to Azores for Free by Making Nine QSOs?

Yes indeed, those of you willing to spend 24 hours or less on the radio
are eligible to participate in an Azores lottery for two all-paid packages
to the beautiful Azores Islands in the Atlantic, completely free of charge.
The project is organized by the Azores-Finland Friendship Consortium in
partnership with the Amateur Radio Associations of the Azores Islands and
supported by the Azores Promotion Agency (ATA) and Azorean Airlines (SATA).
Just look at <www.visitazores.com> and make up your mind.
Not many people know that the Azores consist of nine populated islands,
stretching over a distance of 602 km (305mi) from East to West, next to
USA and Europe. And it is not widely known that the Azores have their own
airline (SATA) flying to each island, in addition to many destinations in
Europe and North America. Each island has its own characteristics and its
own blend and alone qualifies for your visit there.
While these islands count for a single DXCC entity, they offer three (3)
    IOTA groupings.
With this unique AZORES 9 ISLANDS HUNT, an invited international group
of amateur radio operators together with resident Azores amateurs will
be activating the nine islands, offering an opportunity to the world to
contact these islands all at once over one weekend.
Activity Weekend - Saturday, September 29th, 1200 UTC to September
30th, 1200 UTC (24 hours). These stations will be active starting Friday,
September 28th as soon as they become operational.

    ON7TK, Alex/OZ7AM, Kenneth/OZ1IKY, Yuri/VE3DZ and Ed/VE3FWA.
Two Hunt Awards - Those making a QSO with at least 5 different islands
will have a corresponding number of tickets placed into a lottery for a
free trip to the Azores (e.g. if you have QSOs with 7 islands, you will
get 7 lottery tickets). Additionally, the first 25 operators making QSOs
with all 9 islands will be eligible for a second lottery. The free trips
are from the closest airport served by SATA; including flight, accommo-
    dation and transfers..
During or immediately after the weekend, the logs will be posted on
Club Log to display your band/mode slots. The lottery will be drawn on
    October 15, 2012.
QSL Cards - All QSOs will be confirmed through the bureau network with
special full-color cards. Direct QSL requests via Jose Melo, CU2CE."

CY0 NEWS RELEASE (Dated August 12th). The following is from the Sable
    Island Web page at: http://www.cy0dxpedition.com
"We are excited to announce that we have received approvals from
'Parks Canada', 'Canadian Coast Guard', and 'Officer-in-Charge, Sable
Island' to operate amateur radio from October 8-17th, 2012.
We should note, however, that our permit to operate includes several
new restrictions on antennas (in addition to the traditional restrictions
for Sable). The purpose of these restrictions are to minimize the environ-
mental impact on the migratory bird population that may be present during
the period that we are on Sable Island.
We feel fortunate to have received the trust of 'Parks Canada' for this
operation and consider it a privilege to be able to visit Sable Island.
We will cooperate fully with these new restrictions to minimize potential
environmental impact to the protected bird species.
In the days ahead, we will assess the impact that these additional
antenna restrictions may have on our operations and any adjustments that
we may need to take relative to antennas that we will take to Sable
Island. Further details of our operating plans will be posted to
    <CY0dxpedition.com>.
This will be our third attempt to get to Sable island (previous attempts,
    December 2010 and December 2011)......
    WA4DAN/CY0 and AA4VK/CY0"

ZL9, CAMPBELL ISLAND (Update/Press Release #5): "Preparations for the
HARAOA ZL9HR DX'Pedition to Campbell Island in the Great Southern Ocean
(IOTA OC-037) are on schedule for the activation dates of November 28th
    to December 9th this year.
The team are delighted to announce a new sponsor in the Northern
California DX foundation, this is in addition to the other sponsors with
Spiderbeam sponsoring ZL9HR and supplying spiderbeam antennas and masts,
21 worldwide DX groups and the prestigious ARRL Colvin foundation award.
Of course we should not forget the 36 individuals who are also sponsoring
the DX'Pedition. Thanks to all of these.
The containers to carry all required equipment are currently being
prepared and loaded, ready to be shipped out of Sydney around the 15th
    of September.
