If EMF is so damaging, how come a sedentary hobby like ham radio has so many really old folk in it who still have all their marbles?

anyone can write those kind of powder puff articles. The 2008 paper the reference is a REVIEW article....not a scientific original study.

Here is just one article that involved huge application of rf energy, with no apparent change.

if there really was a problem here.....people would be dying.

    2008? That’s forever ago.

Let’s see. Millions and billions of people around the world have been using mobile phones for 20 years. I guess the illness must be very subtle. So subtle that nobody has seen it happen yet. But don’t let that trouble you, be afraid - be very afraid!! It’s what sells clicks!

Perfect. Here is the abstract from that:

Franke, H., Streckert, J., Bitz, A., Goeke, J., Hansen, V., Ringelstein, E. B., Nattkämper, H., Galla, H-J. and Stögbauer, F. Effects of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Electromagnetic Fields on the Blood-Brain Barrier In Vitro. Radiat. Res. 164, 258–269 (2005).
"The extensive use of mobile phone communication has raised public concerns about adverse health effects of radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in recent years. A central issue in this discussion is the question whether EMFs enhance the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here we report an investigation on the influence of a generic UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) signal on barrier tightness, transport processes and the morphology of porcine brain microvascular endothelial cell cultures (PBEC) serving as an in vitro model of the BBB. An exposure device with integrated online monitoring system was developed for simultaneous exposure and measuring of transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) to determine the tightness of the BBB. PBEC were exposed continuously for up to 84 h at an average electric-field strength of 3.4–34 V/m (maximum 1.8 W/kg) ensuring athermal conditions. We did not find any evidence of RF-field-induced disturbance of the function of the BBB. After and during exposure, the tightness of the BBB quantified by 14C-sucrose and serum albumin permeation as well as by TEER remained unchanged compared to sham-exposed cultures. Permeation of transporter substrates at the BBB as well as the localization and integrity of the tight-junction proteins occludin and ZO1 were not affected either."

notice the incredible energy applied...for 84 hours

Careful, I'm not so sure that makes your point completely.

In fact, if you tune around 75m, 40m, and 20m, you might come to the conclusion that there are at least a few narrow frequency ranges where exposure to RF seems to cause profound impairment.

Most other frequencies seem to be harmless, perhaps beneficial.

But hey, how many people really care about FACTS when it gets down to it?

Most people believe all sorts of stuff that isn't true, and are very gullible

I suppose one must define the acronym EMF. For instance, I have noted that Extremely Majestic Females do in fact affect the blood-brain barrier. :D

    Couple of reasons:

    1) Inverse square law.

    2) Most amateurs don't operate with the antenna right up against their heads

    3) Most amateurs aren't using cell-phone frequencies

    4) What makes you think the really old hams still have all their marbles? Reading the Zed will easily convince a Casual Observer that many do not.
