    Sunspots, Solar Flux, and Coronal Holes are certainly part of the story. When you consider Earth is a gigantic dipole with a rotating iron core which has magnetic lines proceeding outward from the poles, and the fact that the thermosphere, the seasons, the tilt of the Earth, and magnetic drift all impact propagation, the inescapable conclusion is that we have a lot more to learn by exploring related topics.

    These topics are (among others): the magnetopause (topology and microscopic theories of structure, dynamical effects due to interplanetary magnetic fields and solar-wind pressure changes), the plasmasphere (topology, theories of origin, time variations, plasmaphysical processes), the proton radiation belt (origin, theory of particle motion in the geomagnetic field using invariants), wave-particle interaction (simplified theory, experimental verification), the electron radiation belt (origin, transport, losses), excitation of waves (velocity space instabilities, applications and experimental verification), aurorae (origin, plasmaphysical effects associated with barium cloud releases in the ionosphere), the plasmamantle and the plasmasheet (topology, possible connection between the two phenomena), and finally a brief overview of magnetospheres in the Solar System which have been accessible to 'in situ' investigation using space probes.

    Thats right, that there is much more to get to know for a good forecast. For example the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission of NASA, which explains the distortion of the magnetic field of the Earth. And what effect this got in cause of and to the magnetic reconnection. Because the magnetic field of the Earth is always pulsing, distort by particles and not standing still. And that there are magnetic fields too, which are hard as stone and dont move, so that nothing get through physical. Much work anymore for scientist to do.

    This is not this hard. Your QTH determines what you will be able to hear or transmit ... second, propagation predictions aside, the atmosphere gases thwart whatever the geophysical or solar characteristics may provide...third, using local software for real-time or HF ALE Link map, you can see what is happening now. Theory is good for classrooms when we have today's tools & the internet.
