It has been reported that Doug passed away this morning. Those of you in the QRP world likely know of this man. He has shaped the low-power world for years and was involved in the creation of the radio that eventually led to the formation of Elecraft. Truly a giant among the genre. He owned multiple QRP kit businesses over the years and introduced thousands of amateurs to some of the most well-known and usable radios of the last few decades. I was lucky enough to meet Doug at Pacificon 2018 and have spoken with him many times over the years. I hope others will chime in with grand stories of Doug and his incredible generosity. 72 Doug. dit dit.
I never met Doug but we exchanged a couple of messages on groups.io. What I found amazing was his willingness to talk with relatively inexperienced hams like me without talking down to us.
Sorry to hear this. I spoke with Doug a few times by phone, and I think we met at Dayton once or maybe a couple of times. I always admired his work. The world is just a little dimmer with his passing. 72 es gud DX, Doug.
That’s sad news. I looked forward to seeing and talking with Doug at Pacificon every year. The Qrp venue was my favorite part of the event. Especially since the vendor displays have dwindled to almost nothing. The Qrp event was really the main reason for me to keep attending until two years ago. I knew he was having health issues but he didn’t seem to show it at Pacificon. RIP Doug. Don.
Thanks for posting. I thought it felt too sudden! In recent years he focused on the position and enjoyed some fun activities in addition to ham radio.
