HI to all , just arrived my RETEVIS RT3.... wow great i LOVE this radio !!!

DMR is a real NEW World for ham-radio operators !

Just arrived yesterday , then programm to used this radio is a little hard ( but not so difficult) ....and after 15 minutes i was ON-AIR !!! GREAT the DMR radio !

iI Speak to a French ham-radio collegue.... after i speak to a Americam ham-radio and today with 2 ham-radio in Greece, very nice system , i love Retevis and DMR !!!

I suggest to Retevis company : is nice to have a reverse lcd screen like black with the letters and number in white, a plastic empty battery pack with use in emergency mode with a NORMAL aa or aaa battery .......and blue toot external microphone-speaker ?

When Retevis made a DRM but Dualbander (VHF and UHF) like our competitors ? and a radio a little more "little" then in this moment ?

CONCLUSION : i suggest to ALL this Retevis Rt3 radio.... is a GREAT radio !

PS more request to some ham-radio operators (then request to me...) i try to prepare a GUIDE to program and use this radio in EASY MODE for the beginner costumers and ham-radio operators.... stay tuned to me .....

Some guide on DMR or for beginner in dmr, in my web site here (sorry ONLY in Italian language) :

The MD380 and RT3 are exactly the same radio, made in the same factory, just rebranded.

Hi Rudy... Thank you for the report on the Retevis RT3. Also, thank you to ZL1RD for letting us know the TYT and the Retevis are alike. I have a DM380 and a DV4Mini. I have spent some time on it trying to learn the various intracacies of programming it and using it. I made my first contact with a gentleman in Hawaii who was very helpful. I just haven't had the time to apply myself to it yet. I hope to program it up so that I can easily listen to stations all over the world. Are there repeaters in your part of Italy? I had to purchase the DV4mini since my QTH in Southeast Iowa is all rural and dotted with analog repeaters but the closest digital voice repeater is about 40 miles and it's DStar! Hopefully someone will have the time and funds to put a repeater up near me. I won't mind helping them do that at all!

I have been using DMR for quite some time now, but on a non-ham net using Hytera equipment. So far my experience is positive and especially the roaming feature that is offered on the Hytera radios is a nice feature when you are active in an area where the terrain is unforgiving.

My experience is primarily for DMR on VHF which is in my opinion the better alternative in rural areas while UHF is best in cities.

TYT/Retevis DMR radios are basically trunked radios and very simple to use.
They furthermore are suitable for EMCOMM, as you can define channels for
    different purposes and groups.

The experimental firmware by Travis KK4VCZ, makes it easier to use for hams:
    https://github.com/travisgoodspeed/md380tools

You can dowload a compiled firmware here:
    https://web1.foxhollow.ca/DMR/Files/Firmware/Experimental/?C=M;O=D

Be careful to flash the RT3/MD380 radios with the NoGPS firmware and the
RT8GPS/MD380G/MD390 radios with the GPS firmware.

The users.csv database has to be compiled and flashed in the normal radio mode like a codeplug.
I compile under Linux Mint. The whole procedure is explained on the MD380tools page above.

Our DMR group here in Germany has grown rapidly. I regularly flash the newest firmware and
users database for our club members.

Yes, maybe is one of the possible future... one of the many roads our hobby can take.
In the meanwhile, bewteen a DMR chat (which uses internet channels) and another, i will carry on doing CW in HF... the most ancient but still the most efficient way to communicate.

    Thanks for the honest review

"DMR is a real NEW World for ham-radio operators !"

how can a commercial technology that has been around for a while be "New"

personally it is nothing more than another flavor like: allstar, dstar, fusion, irlp or even the lowly looked upon echolink

are we a "new" generation of hams that are losing touch with our heritage and HF to be connected via the internet via some voip/tdma technology for global communications one must ask

Is this a true statement? In my area, DMR seems very dead. Most are still using analog on UHF and VHF. If I understand correctly, the radio only does UHF.

Baofeng DM-5R_Plus seems a better DMR option since it is cheaper and dual-band v/u, no?

Personally I think D-STAR is far more flexible in that that you have control over what is linked. You can link to reflectors, other repeaters, do callsign routing. I think DMR gives you a form of callsign routing by using CCS numbers. Fusion is easier to use as well but I don't believe it offers as much flexibility. As for the future? I don't think in 20 years any of these modes will be the winner. There's too much development going on.

    You are right in everything...
But i feel to bet on DMR, is the unique "open" and not proprietary.

$108 for a DMR radio with software and a cable versus $300+ for D-Star radio, *plus* software and cable was my deciding factor. Local seller furnished a working code plug for the MD-380, which got me on the air, but was rather bloated. I've since figured out the programming and have a neater codeplug which does what I want. Only drawback is some of the online listings apparently don't have all the talk groups listed for the repeaters, as I see activity, but not on the talk groups from the list.
