I have worked PSK31 and RTTY with no interface for years.

I have a manual PTT switch, a line out of the PC to a mic plug and a line from the headphone jack to the PC.

rough and dirty, but it works. 71 countries worked so far.......

    so.....

How much hassle is setting up a "real" interface?

it would handle the PPT automatically, but is there any other advantage?

    thanks for your wisdom!

    Look for the FIF232 schematic

long story short it is more a cmos/ttl level converter - and will enable you to get the CAT tune / ptt/ mode set going. Remember that ft8 needs accurate timing and a manual ptt could be the pain point.

Then; since you do work rtty psk means you do have proper audio from/to computer going.

Honestly ; not much of a hassle and doable with less than $50 budget. Good luck!!

I use a BlueMax49ers USB to CAT cable from Ebay to control my FT840, first from a laptop, now from a Raspberry Pi. It has an FTDI chip, so it actually works well. It handles PTT and frequency control. It might do other things too, but that is all I use it for.
