The Maritime Radio Historical Society in cooperation with our good friends at the Cipher History Museum will send a coded message in 5-letter groups via the facilities of coast station KPH on Saturday July 23, 2022. The message will be encrypted using the famous Enigma code machine, and will be sent by CW and RTTY.

All KPH listeners are invited to try their hand at receiving and decrypting the message. Certificates will be awarded for proof of successful decode, first to decode and use of original hardware."

Wow - this is a very cool challenge. I have always been fascinated by crypto machines. I used to "goof off" with friends using the KL-7 simulator program, back when MARS management allowed experimentation on certain channels. Nice to see this! .... Nice to see an ENIGMA simulator, too! :)

I get the 'spirit' of this activity, but I thought it was illegal for amateur radio to use codes/cipher/encryption (beyond "Q" codes, of course). I suppose, I should turn off my KW-7 and KG-58!

mea culpa - frequencies are outside of the amateur bands... I made an assumption they'd be using the 630m band.

Is it really encrypted if you tell everyone how to decode it?

I missed this by a day. Dang! I have questions about how this was done. The pictures and link imply that the message will be (or was) enciphered using an Enigma machine or a software simulation of an Enigma. Is the key being shared with us? Or are we supposed to guess it? Or are we expected to use some Bombe machine simulation or other way to decrypt the message without any knowledge of the key?

Unfortunately I missed the event. Is there a recording of it so some of us can still give this a try?

    Hello OMs,

    we also missed it here...
Have a friend which made an Enigma by himself as a project!
Would be so nice if someone made a soundcopy of the CW transmission, so we could do the job for fun here :)

Amazing! The first post states, "The message will be encrypted using the famous Enigma code machine, and will be sent by CW and RTTY". The link and subsequent links give you the key(s) and all the information needed to decode the message.

I missed this unfortunatly. but just one question. Isn't the sending of encrypted messages illegal?
