Coronavirus: Bengal Ham radio operators help police in tracking

Outlook India reports "Ham radio operators in West Bengal are helping police in tracking down mass gatherings and sending vagabonds to the shelters during the nationwide lockdown imposed in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, officials said on Thursday"

    The magazine says:

Police in various districts have received inputs from licenced amateur radio operators in identifying spots and places where social gatherings have been taking place, a senior officer said.

"This helps us taking swift action against those who are defying the 21-day lockdown," the police officer said.

The Ham operators have licences to conduct such communications under specific radio frequencies by the Union Ministry of Communications.

West Bengal Amateur Radio Club secretary Ambarish Nag Biswas VU2JFA said around 280 Ham operators are working round the clock in tracking down spots of social gatherings and also helping people, who are in distress, during the lockdown.

"After discussion with police, we have opened a helpline number and are using our network to track areas of social gatherings and rescuing people in distress. There is a chain through which the network is working," Biswas told PTI.

Elaborating about their activities through the network, Biswas said there are around 10-12 Ham radio operators in each district, barring Darjeeling.

The story originated from the Press Trust of India (PTI) and can be read in full on Outlook India at

I call them patriotic citizens - helping to protect the public by turning in those that choose to flaunt the laws and endanger others.

The foundation of a law abiding society is cooperation with law enforcement. You can see how degraded the culture is in those
areas where they call the honest people snitches and narcs.

If the tests and statistics were accurate this wouldn't be a pandemic to begin with. The truth is the test kits detect any Coronavirus variant, i.e. including common colds. And even with that huge oversight, as more tests are done the mortality statistics are going drastically lower. Dr. Fauci who originally started a panic with his claim of ~3% mortality rate recently revised his numbers to be similar to a "bad flu". References:

It's not for others to determine how things are handled in another country.

None of what you just wrote is true. Might I suggest you not get your health information from conspiracy sites. Even if the fatality numbers dropped to 1% (which I doubt will happen), that would be ~10x worse than the fluy here in the USA. Stay home & stay safe...and more importantly, keep OTHERS safe. 73

It is definitely warranted to be cautious above all, though I would point out that the links I posted are in fact informed, educated opinions, data, insights, and questions from dozens of medical experts. For anyone to categorically dismiss all of that as simply false and from 'conspiracy sites' only reveals that they clearly did not read any of the articles. I'll leave it to others to decide for themselves to what extent any truths may be found therein and on the qualifications of said professionals. I do not agree with everything stated in each and every article, but I found them to be more informative, useful, and greatly more scientific and objective than the sensationalist fear mongering that the talking heads on corporate media have all been trying to outdo each other with. 73
