Aug 19th I was able to copy rtty with several different software on 40 meters...on Aug 20 when rtty roundup started I could not copy anything....the waterfall kind of looked like rttym from what I have seen there something I am missing here??

Don't know, perhaps the receiver and software were overwhelmed by all the activity.

    What software?
    What's your receiver?
Does it receive RTTY using FSK or AFSK?
Does it have sufficiently narrow filtering for RTTY?
Many rigs receive AFSK through the regular 2.5 KHz ssb filter.
That's too wide for a contest when signals are packed close together -- so there are multiple signals within the pass-band, so none of them will decode.

Just remembered, all it took to throw your digital reception out of whack was to move the IF shift off center. With the IF off center the tones were no longer in the filter just right.
