Randy Thompson K5ZD and Tom Georgens W2SC went to Bologna Italy with every intention to win the World Radiosport Team Championship. Despite their best efforts, they fell short but not by much. They ranked 8th out of 58 teams with an overall score of 5,945,800 points which included 4390 QSOs in 24 hours. Randy talks in detail about qualifying, selecting the right teammate, prepping for their operating station, redundancy, location surprises, and contest tactics. If you're into ham radio contesting, you'll enjoy hearing from this contest hall of famer and repeat WRTC competitor.
I've done CQ WW from Europe once - working in Austria, QRP from a hotel. I was amazed how many stations were workable. The fact that they could make a bazillion contacts isn't so amazing.. The fact that I managed to work a handful from the west coast with wire antennas, and they were able to hear me at all... That's skill.
This is inspirational. There is time for anyone looking to be in the WRTC in 2026 (UK), to start their journey with the 1st qualifying event in October 2023 (CQWW). I am looking forward to this challenge... 73
