I have come into possession of an old Collins AM transmitter. Is there any way to find production numbers, original cost etc of something like this? I'm interested in trying to find out the history of the unit.

It's a 550A-1 broadcast transmitter. I'll have pictures up shortly.

Nice! Has it been converted to ham band, or still on 1410 ?

Looks like the 4-250s have been swapped out for 4-400 already

It has not been converted. There's actually quite a story with this transmitter and I'm trying to put together some of the pieces with it. You are correct the 4-250's have been swapped out. It was up and operational until Christmas Day. Serial number is #126. Any clue of where to chase down production numbers, original sale date, original pricing?

I've done some googling about it and found a couple Collins catalogs from around 1960 or so with mention of it, but nothing definite. I didn't save the URLs but I believe the website was "" ... I searched for "Collins 550A-1 transmitter"

I'm sure the Collins gurus will be along shortly.

I have only one thing to say, "Ooooo, can I touch it?"

Wow wow wow..... Did you know Joe Walsh WB6ACU has one of those in his living room? :)

What an amazing find - I hope you have years of AM nostalgia contacts with it
