    The apparent "gain" will increase as you decrease the bandwidth.

    The "pitch" of the voice should remain the same. Methinks that the stations are not exactly on the same frequency. Even 20 Hz or 30 Hz difference in frequency will make a difference in how the voices sound.

    Adding a product detector to the R-388/51J- series is not for the feint of heart. Unlike the 75A-2 and 75A-3 there is no NBFM adapter socket which allow one to add a product detector easily.

    There are certainly several product detector choices to pick from, from simple to mildly complicated.

    I did the 6BE6 mod on my R-388 but went with a 6BY6 which has better signal handling. For the 51J4 I use a Central Electronics Model B Signal Slicer and I recently picked up a RME 4301 for another project.
