The main/ best photo is up on the thread. I posted it.

I then processed it for higher resolution and color management.

The absence of stars is caused by the limited dynamic range of the imaging systems used. Both were, relatively, short exposures.

Try taking a full moon photo with your digital camera, so you can see the fine detail of the surface --and you will have a similar issue.

Our eyes do a better job on tackling the problem of very bright versus relatively dim.

This is independent of any scattering from atmosphere, which further limits dynamic range, except at high altitudes.

BTW, if you decide to climb Mt Everest, a large swath of sky is approaching BLACK rather than scattered-light BLUE. The photos you see on this are realistic. And you can see a FEW stars during the day.....

Probably, but I don't understand why the shadow appears to be round at the angle it's hitting Earth.

    Shouldn't it be oblong?

The 'realistic' comment was respect to Mount Everest :)

Probably a distortion caused by being off-normal to (sphere) surface... a good example is...

Yeah, the world often looked like that in the sixties!

I cherry picked my quote, sorry about misdirecting.

The more I look at the original photo the more it looks like a possible composite to my eye.

Can't put my finger on it, just something "not quite right" about it.

The dynamic range is a bit poor, but if its a fake, its not a very good one:)!

Keep in mind there is stitching messing up the shading subtelties. The lunar surface 'stitching' is readily apparent on my de-blurred version, for example. So, technically, it IS a composite:) That's expected because the microsats have limited buffers and send sections of the image at a time, I presume.

Or not enough light in the exposure to pick them up.

Thank you for that kind reply! I was going to say something similar, but wouldn't have been as nice.

Flat and young-earthers, moon-landing conspiracy, anti-vaxers, chemtrails, religion, etc. deserve no place in an evolved mind.
