I have a bottle of this ink, which has lasted me about 3 years so far. The cost is $18:

I have a similarly priced refill kit, which consists of a smaller bottle with a needle on top. The ink that came with it originally lasted me about a year. You need to drill a small hole in the cartridge, and it's a simple matter to refill, even for a klutz like me. I do it in the laundry tub, which allows for easy cleanup of the inevitable spill.

If you don't feel comfortable drilling the hole, then you can buy a refilled cartridge at a store with a name something like Ink Cartridges R Us. They already have the hole drilled, and you simply have to peel back the label. About once a year, I need to buy a new cartridge from them for about $20. Every six months or so, I need to run through the printer's cleaning routine.

If I had to buy new ink cartridges, I'd probably just throw the printer away when it was empty, since a new printer generally costs about the same as the refills. But the way I'm doing it now, my cost of ink is a couple of dollars per year. If I simply bought refill cartridges, it would be a couple of hundred a year.

One caveat: Some, if not all new printers come with lightly filled "starter" cartridges, so you may not be getting all
the ink you expect. Greedy companies!!

Come to think of it, my first trip to Printer Cartridges R Us did come pretty soon after I bought the printer. But as soon as I had a working cartridge with the little hole already drilled in it, I've printed thousands of pages virtually cost free.

HP offers standard and extra large cartridges for their printers. The ink in new HP printers is the standard cartridge. On lasers most ship with a standard black toner and starter color toner. When an HP inkjet comes with a "Setup" cartridge it is a special initial ink but the usable capacity is close to the capacity of the standard size replacement cartridge.

Probably not. Most of my writing lately has been historical, western history, and historical fiction...years ago technical stuff.

However you might have read some of the pornography books. :) <joke>

I always seem to wind up migrating back to an HP - currently an OfficePro 8100 that has been in service for a few years now, Wifi networked and working fine with a mix of Linux, Windows 7 Pro, laptops and a myriad of "devices", (iPad, iPhone, Android, etc.)..

Amazon sells a HP 1109 laser for less than $80....I buy 3rd party toners for $9 and we use the heck out of it at VE sessions. It prints the 605's, session summaries, and it has not missed a beat. Weighs less than 10 lbs ...OOOPS Amazon has jacked the price of that one to $253 now....WOW....I got mine a year and a half ago for like $78
