    There was an initial surge of hiker 'mountain topping' back in the early 70's, with the advent of 2M FM and 'hand held' transceivers. I climbed Mt Washington in 1972 with a Drake TR-22... (only to find dogs and guys in Hawaiian shirts at the top , from transportation with the cog railway:))

    The advent of very small HF transceivers is what re-kindled interest in the last 15 years.

    Steves signal always seems to get out, no matter what he is running. He is a great guy, and an inspiration for many of us.

    It may surprise you to know that Volcanoes on the Air is a subset of SOTA. :D
