Here is a link for the capacitor and inductor characteristics of surface mount parts. Its also educational for those who are not professionals. Just enter the the parts, size, value, TC, and breakdown voltage and it will give you the series resonate frequency and other pertinent data plus a Murata part number.

Don't forget "ELSIE", supplied with the ARRL Handbook software package.

    Another one

I'm looking at ELsie, which seems to be a S-Parameter based RF filter program. I normally use "Touchstone 3" for RF design since it also allows for active devices to be included in your design. Touchstone is a little dated but the cost of S-Paramater based RF design software is how shall I say, very high. :(

Here is another program I forgot to include previously. It's called FilterPro and is distributed by TI. This program allows for the design of numerous mathematically derived active OP-Amp filters, both low and high pass. Link: Just click on the red download button.

Here is link to the PDF file which explains the operation of low pass FilterPro filters.

I like 5Spice for circuit simulation. The free version can do several stages and is not limited as to the number of models that can be used.

Spice simulation programs can't be used at work for new design because of errors. It was also found during design reviews that some of those using them had submitted SOP filters (SOP acronym for "seat of pants"). In other words the filter may have looked more or less like a chebyshev but didn't quite work like a real chebyshev.

However, Spice simulators can sometimes be used for reverse engineering other peoples circuits rather than take the time to build them up. Bottom line is that many times the spice models aren't available or have errors in them.

In doing design sometimes the best designs are done with pencil, paper, and calculators, computer programs make great tools for checking your work and are really great for documentation.

By the way S-Parameter based programs simulate circuit elements more completely and accurately, particularly for the higher frequency circuits with components like capacitors which are represented as an inductor, capacitor, and resistor all in series with one another.
