On Sunday May 23, Bob Brown NM7M of Anacortes, WA passed away. Bob was born in 1923, and was first licensed in 1937. After a long lapse from Amateur Radio, Bob re-joined the ranks in 1981.

Bob retired from the University of California at Berkeley in 1982, where he was a professor of physics. After retirement, Bob started writing about MF and HF propagation for various publications, including WorldRadio (his Propagation column ran from April 1989 through December 1996), The Canadian Amateur Radio Magazine, QRP Quarterly, The DX Magazine, The Low Band Monitor, CQ, Communications Quarterly, QST, and others.

Bob also contributed comments to various reflectors, and posted propagation tutorials to various web sites. Bob wrote five books for Radio Amateurs ranging in topics from long path propagation to ion chemistry to 160m propagation.

Bob was a great teacher, and his understanding of and comments to propagation issues will be missed.

Many of us will miss Bob. He was brilliant and a very good friend over the years. I enjoyed the opportunity along with Merle, K6DC (SK), and Rad,
W6THN (SK), to contribute years of long-path DX QSO data for his use in writing his technical papers on long-path propagation. His many contributions to our hobby will be enjoyed by many. I'll miss you Bob.

I have a copy of Bob's 'Little Pistols Guide to HF propagation' sitting in front of me. I had planned on sending Bob a note telling him how much I have enjoyed his writings over the years. I may get on late tonight and call him to relay my thanks directly. It may be long path but I am sure he will get my message.

Bob also wrote an article for the "Mariners Weather Log" concerning
propogation. It explained why the third mate could not get a fax
printout during the period of low sun spot cycle
