What’s the best shack in the box. I currently run a Yaesu 991, but thinking of changing radios. Im after a shack in the box ie: hf/vhf that covers the full spectrum. Any recommendations out there

    None.
HF + VHF is an inefficient grouping of operational parameters.
. Like overhauling a transmission in your kitchen.

If I had to pick a radio, FT-847 with all the filters and options installed. But since they're no longer making that one, take WL7PM's advice and get a great HF radio,, and get a great VHF/UHF radio.

No matter which radio you get, you have to hook to an antenna.

It's not the radio that makes the most difference, it's definitely the antenna.

A Flex 6600/6700 or an Elecraft K4, connected to a couple of good transverters and a farm of good antennas.

A better question might be: what's the best set of radios for my needs, given my budget after I get the best antenna system my circumstances will permit.

Ft897D is sort of old at this point, but its nice you can run self contained batteries if desired and qualifies as a 'shack in a box'.

But as others have stated...What roll is it trying to fill? how much other 'stuff' are you willing to carry? Are you wanting portable shack-in-a-box? or Home QTH shack-in-a-box?

Old? Old is my 706llg. It does everything, but not at an optimum level.

Which works for me, since it really is all about antennas.

I also say the FT897D is a good all around shack in the box.

Very happy with the ICOM IC 9100 I have. I used it mostly on VHF for the first year. I've since purchased a IC 9700 to use on VHF/UHF and now use the 9100 for HF/6/.

Have a ICOM 7100 in the truck with a Tarheel 100HV, and a dual band VHF/UHF whip. Nice installation, works well, and the head is easily concealed in the console when parked.
