Best amp for beginners

    Be aware....while some have good luck with the MFJ solid state amps, many do NOT. Take a stroll through eHam, maybe. My feeling is that if you want reliability in a solid state amp, you need to think "top of the line" or at least the next tier above MFJ. If you want to stay in their price range I advise sticking to their tube amps. ;)

    I think I'd avoid 811 or even 572b amps now because of fragility (811) and just not having good tubes to source (572b).

    This leaves the 3-500 as an output device with the best 'fire in the wire' for the money. That tube can take a mistake and not burn up.

    If the antenna is set up decently. you won't need a tuner.

    The 811s can definitely be OK if they are treated gently. They are, however, not the tubes they were when they were produced in the U.S.; some of these Chinese tubes WILL flash over no matter what you do. Luckily, they are inexpensive. ;)
